They most likely are 3.73's or 4.56 or 4.88, never heard of 4.73', if it was a 2.5 Auto it should have 3.73 OEM, to up grade you can add Chrome Molly Axles, or go to Lower Gears like I said before, this all needs to fit the size tires your running, like a 2.5 with 33" needs about 4.56 or a 2.5 with 35" needs 4.88, it just need to be set up for what You are doing.

The best money I have spent on any part has got to be the spartan locker I put in the D30. Absolutly love the thing offroad, it pulls hard and gets you through the schit you use to fight to get through. Definitely worth the money to me.

If I read the original post correctly, it sounds like he already has front and rear lockers? Also 4.73 ratio???? Yeah...haven't heard of that one on a Jeep? The TJ 1 piece axle shaft has larger u joints, don't believe the Cherokee did. I had my axle tubes welded. The chromo shafts are suppose to be significantly stronger(40%?).

I did an ARB locker, chromo shafts with the larger u-joints, and a Warn Hub Conversion back when that was available.

Put it on jack stands. Chalk mark on driveshaft and tire. Rotate DS counting revs to get one rev on tire. 4.73 sounds like a unicorn.

This will get you in the ballpark. Compare your calculations to what is commonly available for D30 axles. Suitable for most situations.

The most certain way is to remove the cover and count the teeth on the ring gear and the teeth on the pinion gear, then divide pinion tooth count into ring gear tooth count. If your arithmetic is anything like mine, use a calculator.

Reinstall cover with new gasket (FSM recommends RTV) and fill with gear lube of your choice.

Good Luck, L.M.

Did you use one of those vacuum disconnect deletes? Just put a plate over the housing and put a seal in by the carrier?

Yes.

I've got the same set up (4.56's, xj shafts with fresh spicer joints, spartan locker),

To the OP, as far as strengthening the D30 further, once the bigger ujoints are in it's a pretty tough axle. Check the ball joints and the unit bearings and replace those with good parts if needed and call it a day with 35" or smaller tires.

If you really want piece of mind, weld the tubes, spring for alloy shafts, and install C gussets and sleeves. Problem with all that is you'll be spending close to D44 money on your D30 and still have the smallish ring gear and unit bearings as a weak link.
There are manual hub conversions out there but that will put you well above the cost of a D44...
