Deciding Which YJ

Hey,

New to the forum and am currently deciding between some used Jeeps.

1. 1989 Jeep Wrangler 2.5L $4995 130k miles https://orangecounty.craigslist.org/...623913430.html

2. 1991 Jeep Wrangler 2.5L $4500 147k miles
https://orangecounty.craigslist.org/...618363541.html

3. 1987 Jeep Wrangler 4.2L $3900 88k miles
https://inlandempire.craigslist.org/...614151080.html

Just wondering what more experienced people think about these options. Thanks for any input.

Personally i would go with the black cherry. None of those jeeps have the ideal engine anyway. I personally want fuel injection for reliability. I would contact both sellers and tell them you have options, they will more than likely knock the price down and you'll have your answer. I say black cherry and engine swap later on.

Well, the 4.2 is just a carbed 4.0 basically. (Which is why so many parts interchange & you can build a stroker from the two.)
Plus the 87 already has a Weber carb & CAD upgrade.
But I would look at each one & test drive each one.Take a real hard look at the rear frame rails then decide.

Take a close look at each, particularly for rust on the frame and secondarily rust on the tub. Drive each one.

I don't think the '87 will pass California smog inspection. If it will pass smog inspection then I'd lean toward this one. Before handing over any money I'd want to see a current CA smog approval or sticker or whatever it is that the CARB people issue to allow the vehicle to be driven on the roads.
The ad states it needs a new quarter panel. The pics aren't very good to show why.

It appears that none of the Jeeps come with a top. The '87 doesn't even have doors.

If the '87 doesn't fit your needs, the black cherry Jeep is my next choice.

When you go back to make the deal on the Jeep of your choice, bring CASH and meet at a police station. If the seller can't produce a CLEAN title at your first viewing, I'd ask why. NEVER hand over any money until you have a chance to examine the title.

Good Luck, L.M.

The reason I lean toward the '87 is the 6cyl vs the 4cyl. The black cherry is probably a better vehicle. If the 4cyl will be serviceable for you that's the one you should have at the top of your list.

Good Luck, L.M.

Thanks for the input. I drove the black cherry one and it was solid. Everything was in good running condition. That back door was welded shut because it wouldn't latch and they didn't know how to fix it. Seems $4k is the lowest I can get that one for. I'm going to look at the 87 later today. I think I can get a good deal on that one considering it needs a little bit of work.

If you're considering the 91 then don't overlook that 89.
It looks clean overall but still check those rear frame rails (If they're rusted on any of them, they could end up being a junker.).
Don't let shiny paint distract you, if the rear door is welded shut on the 91, what other shady work has been done? Definitely a red flag.

How complicated can a tailgate lock be? I agree with ZombiePopper, that's a BIG red flag.
I had a '57 Ford Ranchero that I had to weld the tailgate shut because the quarter panels were so rotted that it wouldn't close or stay shut.

If you go ahead with the '87, ask the seller to include the doors. There's another Jeep in the pics and he may be holding the doors back for the other Jeep.

Make sure that the '87 will pass smog inspection! If not, you're looking at a parts Jeep or spending $1500.00 for a Howel fuel injection setup. The Howel setup is (to my understanding) the only FI that's CARB certified.

Again, "Caveat Emptor".

Good Luck, L.M.

Welding the tailgate???

With it being repainted I am so confused.

Things to consider is what you want. I bought my jeep with the idea of having a beach cruiser, not lifted too high or on 40s. Just a nice classic jeep.

If you want a crawler then the 4.2 is what you want to start off with. You're lucky to be shopping. I wish I was looking at buying another heep

I'm looking for a jeep that will be mainly used around the beach. I think the longest trip I would take would be LA to San Diego. I saw this one today and am thinking this could be a good option.

Looks good to me. You can easily bring back the shine on that paint with a good compound.

At least it has doors and the tailgate doesn't appear to be welded shut.

Why don't any of these Jeeps have tops? It must rain at some time or another in SoCal.

Good Luck, L.M.
