Did I pay too much for this?

This is my recently purchased YJ, I paid $3900 for it as-is:

Mechanically everything is sound, engine runs very well, no leaks, no burn, nothing worn, brakes and clutch are good. Doesn't have power steering though. :/

The lift needs to be completely re-done, it's supposed to be a 4" lift + 1" body lift, but the leaf springs are so worn (and actually bent) that it has sagged to about a 2" total lift... and I discovered the front ball joints need replacing as well as the track bar assembly. The problems have made the left front wheel about 1.5" farther forward than the right front wheel which is making it follow the road terribly, I can't drive on the highway without weaving in and out of my lane like a drunk driver, it is actually kinda dangerous. All in all it's gonna cost me about $2000 to get it all fixed and the lift re-done.

It also needs new tires (lookin at the TSL/SX, gonna get 35's) and the gear ratio changed cause it's still the stock gears.

What would you all have paid for this as-is?

159k body miles with "supposedly rebuilt engine"
never been in an accident

Yeah CL is where I got it, as i didn't wanna pay for a dealership's overhead. Under 4k the wranglers tend to be pretty rough around the edges...

Well with the re-done lift, tires, new gears, some cosmetic things on the outside, and possible power steering conversion i'm lookin at dropping 6k into this thing, could i really sell for 10k after that?

whooa! i figured about having 6000 into it total! 10k na i dont think it reachable. you look'n to sell or you thinking of keeping it? if your fix'n it to sell for profit ya probaly gave a little much for it. if keeping do the susipion and tires to get it roadable than as time goes by add a little more. might not be as hard to take compaired to dropping the money sack all in one time. good luck

sad but true: most of the time a vehical is a losing investment! on a better note you ought to be able to get most of your money back, depends on the shape of it when ur done with it!

ditch the track bar. no need to fix that. if your doing the work yourself you will gain tons of knowledge and it will be worth every penny. also check craigslist for parts and or tires. i found a brand new set for $500 with rims. As always, happy jeepin'

You might want to remove the rear corner armor and check for rust. Lots of PO's use the armor to hide bad rust spots.

I always say that a YJ in good shape with everything working and no major body or frame issues is worth about $5,000. Try to keep your cost of repair down by doing the work yourself, finding parts on craiglist or quadratec.com, and plan on keeping it. Once you get it fixed the way you want it and have eerything working you will know it is done correctly, and with that, you need to be happy with what you have.

I would say no I paided 5gs for my jeep. It had low original miles (98000), but leaked oil horribly, brakes were so so, tires were worn, and shocks were shot! The thing that stood out like mentioned above^^^^^ it had very little rust, which is kinda rare cuz out here you typically can have snow fall from august till april with plenty of road salt to follow!

Since you've already bought it....then....YES...you got a good deal!!! I've bought plenty of vehicles and, like you, I almost always found myself wondering if I did the right thing. I finally learned to let go of that....it is more fun believing that you got a good deal.
Truth is, you really won't know until you've had it awhile and discovered whether the joy it gives you is in proportion to the costs...and then...after that....it won't be until it comes time to sell it that, in terms of strict financial sense, whether it was a good buy.

Well, I sold it today. Didn't want to deal with it. I got $4400 for it, which is exactly what I put into it if you include what I paid in sales tax and shit. So, I just reversed my decision. I'll be lookin for a stock YJ that I can lift/mod from scratch and not have to repair other people's shoddy work.

If the body and frame on that jeep was clean, I don't think I would of sold it. I would think think that you will end up spending about the same amount anyway when you find your stock rig.
