Differences in 4.2 vs 4.0 as a DD

I am looking at an '87 YJ with a 4.2. Looks like it's in really good condition. My current Jeep is a '97 Sahara with the 4.0. I just recently picked it up but I am thinking of flipping it as it has a lot of rust issues that I will have to deal with. The '87 would be a DD for me. How is the 4.2 / 87 YJ as a DD and what should I expect coming from a '97 TJ?

I have an 87 and I love it.. However.. The first problem is the BA-10 transmission, it's junk! Not worth rebuilding.. As far as the the 4.2, it's a good strong motor. I replaced mine with a 350 about a year ago... I LOVE IT!

regarding just the motor, 4.0 is better as a daily. I just upgraded from the 4.2
loved the 4.2 but the FI motor is much easier in daily traffic from my perspective.

That said, if you got rust, go with the solid rig. Both are good power plants

Glad to know. The one that I was eyeballing sold last Sunday per the message I just received. It was a stock, rust free, garage queen with a hard top. There is another '87 that I am looking at but the seller didn't list which engine and hasn't responded back. That one may be sold too. I may still try to rescue the TJ but I figure I will keep looking and either find a donor body for the TJ or simply find something better and let the TJ go.

I have a 4.2l on my YJ the only way a 4.2 makes. Decent dd is with a decent carb. And hei ignition. My 4.2 in the YJ is just as reliable as the 4.0 in my XJ
