Engine Identification

Hi Guys,

I've recently purchased a 1992 Jeep Wrangler YJ Sahara. The engine does not appear to be original, and I'm attempting to identify year of manufacture. Engine is an in-line 6 cylinder. The serial number on the passenger's side plate between cylinders 2 and 3 is 612MX09. From web searches, I've discovered the first digit is the year the engine was built. Is there a way to determine if the "6" stands for 1996 or 2006?

Thanks!

Cast aluminum, or stamped steel?

Assuming the cover is original to the motor, cast would be 96, stamped would be 06. Another clue might be if it has the later intake manifold with curved runners, or the earlier manifold with straight runners. They interchange, so if its straight, it doesn't tell you much, but if its curved, its more likely the 06 as that would be a separate modification

Thanks guys for your replies. I'm posting some pics. The valve cover is definitely stamped steel.

Still unclear.

You have the original style manifold, but the late valve cover.

I dont know any other clues to the year that would still be on the motor. Coil on plug, nubby distributor all would have to come off in order to run the old stuff.
