Factory bumper winch mounting

Hey everyone is it possible to mount a winch on a factory yj bumper. I bought a winch plate to bolt down first and then I was going to put the winch on that. Will this work? Any advice would help. Thanks!

Tim

Your in the TJ section but as long as you have a winch plate designed for your stock YJ bumper then it should be just a bolt up.

The front bumper for the CJ, YJ, and TJ are interchangeable. The TJ added the milk jugs and over the years they added a few more holes, but that's it. The cover behind the bumpers are different on all three however. IIRC, the YJ cover is flat while our TJ cover has ridge along the back.

OP - yes you will definitely need a plate. While you can mount the winch to the top of the bumper without the plate, the bumper alone is not strong enough to resist bending when you pull something with the winch.

I don't think a CJ bumper will fit a YJ.
When I was putting my YJ together, I answered a CL ad for a front bumper. The guy had one from a CJ and it wouldn't fit on my jeep. The bumper he had was too narrow.
It might have been just that particular bumper.

I bought a harbor freight winch mount plate and it required some modification to fit my Jeep. Simply rat tail file out some holes.
If I had to do it again, I'd buy the winch plate from Qtec. I would expect it to fit without any modifications. I replaced my bumper torx bolts with grade 8 hex head bolts and added two more for the back of the winch mount plate. I also used grade 8 flat washers and grade 8 lock washers. We've all heard of Murphys Law.
You have to bolt the winch to the winch plate before mounting it to the vehicle.

Good Luck, L.M.
