Family YJ coming to a CJ guy

My uncle bought a 93(?) YJ Sahara before he passed away from eating himself to death. He gave it to my Dad. My dad has had it for years. He is paring down vehicles now that he is in his 70's. He will be bringing the YJ to me when they come down for Thanksgiving. This being a "family" jeep I want to keep it just as my dad gave it to me and only do upgrades as needed. And those upgrades will only increase reliability. It will not be an offroad jeep except for very occasionally. Forrest trails and the beach. It will become my daily driver.

She has somewhere about 175,000 miles. 5 speed with I6. Stock except for my Dad added a small lift with shackles to fit 32" tires. She is showing her age. The seats are worn, the upper windows don't zip very well to not at all. The rest of the top is functional but I think rough. The AC works but the turn on switch does not always turn it on. It runs and drives great for an old jeep.

My dad is a very functional person. If it works like it should, or mostly like it should, he is not worried about how it looks. Paint is very rough but almost zero rust from what I remember.

Questions for the collective:

Having CJ's, how much different is the YJ really? I know a lot of different parts but functionally, they seem the same.

How hard are stock parts to find? It seems I can find CJ parts easier than YJ parts. Any one know of a good source? The interior seems rough but I can't find replacement parts for seats, carpet, etc. I want it to look stock when I replace/repair stuff.

What parts do I need to be concerned about? Is the D35 really as bad as I read about? What other parts do I need to be aware of.

From what I can tell, the 93-94 YJ's are the best of the YJ bunch. The 4.0 motor seems to be very well regarded as well as the rest of the drive line. The only real weak link seems to be the D35.

Thanks for the input and I'm looking forward to getting a running jeep. Maybe this will help get the CJ's done.

I have much less experience than most of these guys but this is my opinions.

D35 is fine for what you have and what you are going to do with it. If you want a bit more security, get chromoly shafts and you should be fine.

You can buy most parts for a YJ or everyone can point you to a vendor for literally any part.
And I think the parts are relatively cheap compared to the CJ world.

A 93, either 2.5 or 4.0 is going to be fuel injection so no dealing with carbs and all of those headaches.

Glad you made the stop here and good luck with your new Jeep.

91-95 YJ's were solid. The D35 is crap but you can make them last if you prevent shock loading it.

Welcome to the forum. There is plenty of knowledge here to help you along the way. Quadratec is a great source for parts. They have a bunch of nice, stock appearing seat oprtions. The Smittybuilt or Bestop have both gotten pretty good reviews.

Where are you located? Might have additional sources for used parts depending on your location...

There is absolutely nothing at all wrong with a Dana 35 for daily driving with reasonably sized tires and an open differential.

I beat mine really really hard regularly and have been doing so since I got it in 2007 with 170k miles... almost 300k now. I had 31's for the first few years and have had 33's ever since...

If you decide to get into rock crawling you'll need to upgrade.

I come in peace.... I mean you no harm
Currently in the stable: ... 97 tj 4.0 5 speed stock....04 tj 4.0 auto 4" and 33's... 98 tj roller for future build... 94 yj sahara 4.5" RE and 33's... 92 yj sbc 3/4 ton axles and 38's... Cj5,7,yj,xj,ex mud dragster project
