for my fellow Californians with carbureted jeeps

While doing research, I found it is indeed legal to switch to a fuel injected system, if that is your choice, at least according to the california air resource board webiste.

I live in Cal and I installed the Howell tbi with no problems.....had it smogged a few months ago. You just have to make sure you buy the Cal legal system with the CARB sticker

That's all it takes? I've been reading the carb website and they make it sound like you'll get fisted come smog season.

Sounds easy enough. Its like a minefield. Some get lucky. Some are careful. And some get blowed up.

That's all it took for me, no referee.... I just took it to the testing station with the Howell manual and the CARB sheet. They only questioned the Edelbrock air cleaner but I showed them the Howell manual with a picture of the same type of air cleaner and they were satisfied. Unbelievable difference in performance and driveability. Just make sure you get Cal legal kit with the sticker that goes under the hood.

Sweet lord. I was reading the site and it sounded insanely gay. This is my first california vehicle that needs smog.

Beach248 is correct. You have two choices, the Howell TBI or the one Mopar makes. Most guys I've seen on this forum go with the Howell. It must be C.A.R.B. approved to pass CA smog. It's not a cheap upgrade, I've looked into it, but so far my carb is doing a good job and I have no problems passing smog with it.

At idle, mine is kind of jumpy and slow to start sometimes.

I took mine to a mechanic who knows carbs and he tuned it. That made a big difference. If yours is hard to start, the choke is probably stuck closed. Or it might need a rebuild, but I'd be willing to bet that it just needs to be properly tuned.
