Frameless Soft Top

So I'm in the market for a soft top. I have a factory hardtop that I've had since I bought the Jeep. I love the hardtop, yes, but I hate the bs putting it on/off in the summer. I've been leary of the "regular" framed soft top for my YJ (mainly cuz I cant stand the sight of them). I feel like the bulging of the frame deters all sense of my Jeep looking decent (of course, my opinion).

These frameless tops keep sparking my interest. Softopper, RockGear, CalTops (which I hear are terrible?), etc. The softopper really grabbed my interest because they actually have a video on the website/youtube of the top on a TJ but they offer a YJ version.

Anyone have any input for me? Persuading me not go frameless and/or convincing to go with a classic framed top.

seriously torn

I'm getting the softopper one as soon as I pick up a set of full doors! Everything is included in their kit no hidden fees or things to purchase and it looks like it's pretty good quality I can't wait to get it on but it only works with full doors so I'm trying to find a fairly priced set first then pick up the top!!! Good luck and post pics when you get it!

I wish Rampage made theirs for YJ's

I like how big the back windows are on that one, compared to the softopper.. but goodluck! hoping for some1 to make my decision more of an educated one before I buy.

Rampage is "considering" making one and said it could "possibly be out in 6-8 months" but I agree I'd like to have that as well I'm just impatient and the softopper looks to be pretty good quality

You can also use the soft superdoors. That is what the TJ had in the video on the passenger side. I have seen several YJs with the Softopper and superdoors. The only complain is that the superdoors don't fit very well on YJs. So, you trade lower fit for upper fit.
I, too, have been looking at the Softopper and wish they made uppers for the half doors. I like the idea of no hardware. I agree the video looks great and the top looks solid. I also like the aluminum plate in the top rear. Basically, you have one of the best Safari tops on the market when you take off the windows. Pretty cool idea.
I had the Trektop on both my TJ and my JK. I did not care for the design, It was flimsy and leaked in the back.
Please post when/if you buy the Softopper. Would love more reviews for the YJ model.

I have an older California Top on my YJ when the hardtop comes off. I've never understood the complaints about these tops. Way easier to take off and put on yourself, while a Bestop (or factory) is a two person job to do without damage.

Frameless is a misnomer. There is a wire frame around the doors. It also has a rail to hold it all down in much the same way as an original or Bestop top.

Here is the link for Softopper. They sell the YJ frameless top.

Here is a pic of the TJ Softopper. It gives you an idea of the frameless aspect.

I wouldn't call a frameless Jeep top a "misnomer". All frameless tops will have "hardware", such as a rail system, door frames, etc. To me, a "frame" is the bow or system that supports the top. IMHO

you won't "need"" hard doors persay. They only suggest that to give you the best watertight seal because soft doors are just a couple napkins with metal rods for a frame that don't stay still enough to give you the seal a hard door would. I'm looking at getting this top before the end of summer and plan on using my bestop full soft doors with it. Might get it sooner so I can let you know how it does once I get it installed.

The problem is the top door surrounds are rounded like the hard doors but my soft doors are square like my soft top there would either be an opening where they don't line up or overlap where the corners of the doors would point out

oh. i didn't realize that. in that case you could just buy a set of rounded corner soft doors. thats how mine are. or look for a set of half hard doors with rounded soft uppers. it would save you quite a bit over buying hard doors especially depending on what area you're in. where i am doors go for anywhere from 200 to 1000 for a pair depending on condition. eventually i'd like hard doors but my budget isn't allowing it and nobody is selling what i'm looking for.

you can either buy them directly from bestop or any other soft top manufacturer. rampage makes pretty good stuff too. or cruise around craigslist. look pretty far away from you too. you can sometimes find deals on doors the next state over that are worth the longer drive. i found a hard top and full hard doors for 450 total one time but hadn't gotten my paycheck yet so they slipped away might have to be patient with cl though cuz most people don't sell doors everyday.

I too have been seriously looking at the Softopper as well. I have full hard doors and half doors I like to use in the summer.

I'm waiting for Smittybilt to get back to me on these uppers... Smittybilt 89415 - Smittybilt Replacement Door Skins - Application - SummitRacing.com

If they have the rounded top as shown, these might be just what the doctor ordered!

If I have to there are a few writeups on using/modifying TJ uppers.

i don;t know but i have the softopper with hard doors and its great. i bought it for the same reason the op was looking. i was tired of the hardtop removal reinstall work and i didn;t like the soft top frame. i am very happy with it but it doesn't have an aluminum plate in. it does come with door surrounds that are very well made and it actually comes with every little piece you need to install and use it. the only negative (to me) is it comes with those split header channel pieces and i like the single piece header channel so i reused my bikini top single piece header. other then that, i am super super happy with me softopper and i love that it has a storage compartment to put the windows in so you always have them, in case of inclement weather.

it works very well with ac too. stays nice and cool in the jeep
