Front Hydro Shocks knocking

Does, or has anyone else experienced a loud knocking sound from the front shocks when going down a bumpy road when it is cold out? Mine sound like the diff is going to fall off! Only lasts for a few minutes, then it goes away. And only when it is below like 65 deg. And only the front shocks. ??????

Never.

Are you 100% sure it is the shocks? They would only “knock” if they were completely worn out and produced little damping effort, or are loose, and typically that doesn’t change with temperature.

Leaf spring and/or track bar bushings can also “knock” if worn and are loose, but again, I have never seen that change with temperature.

I am racking my brain on this one...I have checked, and re-checked all my bushings, bolts, mounts, you name it. It is coming from the front shocks definitely, and this is the 3rd set of shocks I have put on the front. All different brands, but all hydros. I dunno anymore....

If you are stating that you have had three sets of shocks on the front of your Jeep with the same inherent “knocking” sound, you need to rethink your problem. Certainly improbable, to say the least.
vmxwinn and 12b like this.

Let me ask a dumb question... Have you removed the front shocks and driven it to verify it is actually the shocks?

I was thinking the same thing. If you do, be extremely cautious. The Jeep will be bouncy.
I live on a gravel dead end road that has washboard sections. That would be ideal to try to duplicate the knocking noise. I'd hesitate to drive a vehicle without shocks at highway speeds.
Let us know what you discover if you drive the Jeep with the shocks removed.

I had a knocking noise that I couldn't find. The noise was driving me batty.
It turned out to be a flashlight rolling around in my glove box. Usually I have the flashlight wrapped in a shop rag so that it won't rattle, but I used the rag and didn't replace it. It took me over a month to discover it.

Think outside the box, or in my case, look inside the box.

Good Luck, L.M.
