Going to look at a 1995 yj

Very familiar with tj s and basic things to look for in a jeep. Going to look at my first yj. Its a 1995 with a 4 cylinder. Anything particular I need to look for? Should I leave the 4 cylinder alone and just stick with the inline 6? Its rust free what would you pay ball park. He is asking $5k.

thanks brian nc

I love my 4cyl. Itís just a run around Jeep and not a mudder or rock crawler. My Jeep will do 70 mph no problem. Town mileage is 16-17 mpg. Itís a fun toy to drive. I would stick to a manual and not automatic.

Apparently, the west coast guys haven't got out of bed yet. They will be along shortly to tell you how bad the 4 cyls suck and blah, blah, blah..... It's funny though that there are far more 4cyls out there than others, including mine, still running at 140k.

I have a 4 banger in my YJ it's a good motor near indestructible, easy to maintain, and gets good MPG's if you can accept that it's not a powerhouse of a motor it will get the job done.

Be sure to check the entire frame for rot, also look at the wiring to be sure PO's haven't hacked it all up, be sure the shackles are no longer than 5" center to center of bolts 4" being stock length, also check the vacuum Center Axle Disconnect (cad) on the front axle is functioning or you won't have 4x4. Some folks have done a solid axle shaft conversion some have done a cable disconnect know what it has before you buy it.

Other than that it's pretty much like a TJ

'94 YJ 5sp 5.13, Super 35, HP30 w/Aussie, sitting on 33's, RE chromo drag link, 9500 Lb winch, 4" lift, 4x4 Posi Lock, it's a resto-mod in progress.

4cyl is ok if you keep stock 26" tires and dont lift it. If you plan on lifting it and running big tires look for a 6 cyl or plan a V8 swap because the 2.5 is not going to cut it. The AX5 is not a good transmission for off-roading either.

Not necessarily true many run up to 35" tires with a 2.5 and a re-gear the most popular is a four-inch lift with 33's and 4.88 or 5.13 gears. Still not a powerhouse of a motor but it will get the job done.
