Good or Bad deal? 1989 YJ

Hey,
I am new to the Jeep world and looking to purchase my first. Here is a Jeep that I am looking at, what are you guys thoughts? Fair price? Any questions I should ask the seller? Any red flags? Below is his describe of the Jeep and some pics. He is asking $8500. Thanks

_______

Excellent running Wrangler with 189,XXX miles on odometer but 55,XXX miles were in tow behind an RV so only about 135,XXX on the engine and trans. Clutch, Master and slave cylinders replaced about a week ago. Flywheel resurfaced then, too. Rear end rebuilt last month. Nearly new tires -- big 33x12.5 mud. Lifted to accommodate the tires. New rear brakes and slave cylinders -- about a month ago. New headlights and wipers, heater core, radiator, power steering pump, rear window lift hydraulics (whatever they are really called). Registered through April 2016. AC works.

OK, here is the best part. It has a professionally installed MOPAR (that's the Jeep people) Fuel Injection conversion! Done by MOTECH in Santa Cruz at about 182,XXX miles. This is CA Smog legal and cost almost $5000 to do. It means the entire fuel system (intake, injectors, fuel pump, computer, distributor, -- much more -- has been replaced with new modern stuff. No more Carter carburetor! It's a great upgrade and it is nearly new on this Jeep.

Also, it is the Laredo model (top of the line) has 4.2L 6 engine and 5 speed manual AX-15 transmission

Looks nice and clean, but I think you can talk him down a bit

Technically it would cost that much or more to restore one that to that condition so its not totally off the mark, also its looks rust free.. but pull up the driver and passenger carpet and have a look under there

I was caught by the fuel injection conversion. I remember when they came out in the early '90s and cost about $1300 for the kit at that time. I remember looking at them in '89 but got seduced by an XJ Laredo instead.

The owner has spent a ton of money on the vehicle and it is really nice at this point. So the $64,000 question is - WHY IS HE SELLING IT?

The PO says it was flat towed for 55,000 miles (he kept up with it?) but, if memory serves me correct, the speedometer cable is on the transmission not the transfer case, and if you flat tow it, you put the transfer case in neutral so the transmission will not turn (and by extension neither will the speedo). Also, if it were flat towed, where are the brackets and tow bar?

It's a nice vehicle with just a few questions, but the Red '95 is a better buy.

As I said in the other posts on the Jeeps you are looking for - CarFax, CarFax, CarFax.

speedo is driven from transfer case not tranny. looks like a nice jeep but thats a high price, the mopar FI kit is around 2,500 so a big part of the 5K is install. for that price I'd expect at least a fresh motor.

That's the thing. In California, I've seen worse for that price or higher. If you look around you can find one in better shape, newer, etc for less or that price. I see people on here ask for a certain price is good and it cracks me up because from what I've seen, other states, the jeeps are what looks super nice to me for something like $1500 and in CA the same jeep would be $10,000

Does he have receipts for all the work done?

Also if they just shackle lifted it to accommodate the 33's then that's pretty dumb

I tried to look up the value in KBB, but it doesn't go back that far.

Run CarFax on it.

Guess they figure no one would want to buy a 26 year old vehicle. Little do they know. Run CarFax on it.

Don't worry about the price, worry about the condition and if you can afford it. If it is too high you will know that. If it is a little high and the seller won't come down, compare it to others you have seen. Don't miss out on a good vehicle over a little money.

Did I mention to run CarFax.

I do not have any investment in CarFax, but I have seen some real dogs exposed by CarFax.

I can't wait to see which one he buys and then is in here asking how to fix everything that's broke like the same guy next to him that paid a reasonable 3 grand for his.

Yeah, it does have a bit of an odd stance. Either by shackle lift or body lift. - looks kinda goofy.

+1

I had an '87 YJ Laredo in white, and this YJ sure brings back some good memories.

Those beaver teeth shackles suck! His camber must be really screwed up, I wonder how it steers. It may look nice from a distance, but the way they went about making room for those tires would get me running for the door. You can tell a lot by how an owner mods his jeep.

Agreed.

If it wasn't $8,500 it'd be worth picking up and putting a proper suspension on it.

$5,000 -$6,000 maybe?
