Has anyone ever........

I am running a 94' YJ with a hardtop.

I like the security that the hardtop provides but I like the breeziness of a softtop.

Rather than buy something. I would prefer to homebrew a solution.

I am thinking of a quick disconnect for the back window. That way I could just remove it quickly when I wanted to.

Well, I got to looking a there would be 6 disconnects to go through. 2 hinges, 2 support struts, 1 wiring (wiper), and 1 water hose (for the wiper).

I have since abandoned this idea.

What I am thinking now is the is a groove molded around the back window about 1 -1 1/2" from the window itself. What I am thinking is using a jigsaw to cut in the groove.

Once the cut is complete the entire back window including support struts should come free along with part of the hard top about 2" around the outside of the window.

What I am then thinking is bolting or riveting strips of metal to the hardtop itself on the inside of the new opening.

I could then drill holes through these metal brackets and the rear window assembly. I could then set 4 bolts with wingnuts through the rear window assembly and the brackets to hold everything in place when I want to have a rear window.

When I want to "open air" it so to speak I can just remove the 4 wingnuts and lift the read window area free of the hardtop.

Has anyone ever done this type of thing before? Any tips?

Wouldn't it be just as simple to unbolt the hardtop with the aid of a hoist to hang it from the ceiling ? If it got a slight shower on the drive what would it hurt ? I use two bolts on each rear section and two on the windshield. A plastic knob would make the 6 bolts remove quickly and the wind would blow freely.

wow... i read all that and got a good laugh..
2 people can pull that top in 5 min.. dont waste your time, thought, and money trying to think of other ways.. if your that concerned.. get a soft top... if you remove the back window... you have the same sec. so its not worth the time... just take it off its a jeep thing... hope you understand
