Heavy Duty Tailgate Hinges.....

Seeing stuff for TJs, JKs etc, what about YJs. Aftermarket, direct bolt on preferred...

Thanks....

The hinge is only as strong as the sheet metal it's bolted too. I am trying not to sound like a smart ass but i cant figure out why anyone would need heavy duty tailgate hinges. My only thought is running a full size spare on the factory spare tire bracket but even then it stresses the sheet metal unless you reinforce it like the bestop spare tire carrier does. I never heard of heavy duty hinges before.

I *think* TJ hinges fit the YJ because the late 95 YJ's had TJ hinges on them. I don't think TJ hinges were heavy duty though i think they were just cast pot metal. But if they make TJ heavy duty hinges they would probbaly work.

I thought these looked pretty good. Wider to spread the weight around. But, they say for TJ, I believe I saw them for JK too.

The bushing in my lower hinge is shot.... Moves around and makes a bunch of noise..

THis is what I'm finding for a '95....

https://www.ebay.com/p/Tailgate-Hing...0200/191009395

Here's a used OEM set which wouldn't make much sense...

I wouldn't spend $160+ on a set of hinges that won't support any extra weight due to the thin metal on the tailgate as pointed out earlier. Bestop tire carrier and a regular replacement hinge would be the way to go.

I have the tire carrier and it is far better than I had hoped (and my hopes were high). Zero rattles, zero sag and actually even picked my tailgate back up where it is supposed to be.
agalloch07 and pc1p like this.

I guess I should have been more specific. By heavy duty hinges, I was looking for something that had a quality heavy duty pivot point. Something that would be tougher to wear out.

oversized tires cause the hinges to wear out they were built to support a little 26" tire and even that will wear out over time. If you want something strong that will support tire weight you have to run a bestop carrier or a bumper carrier or strap the tire to the floor. Mounting weight on the tailgate is an all around bad idea.

I swapped out my hinges for the late 95 ones and never had an issue after. I have a 31" MT tire on my tailgate.

With the normal YJ hinges and only a 30" tire on a factory rim - I couldn't close my tailgate without lifting it while I closed it.

The late 95 hinges are ribbed (like the TJ ones) but are drilled to fit the existing YJ bolt locations.

My tailgate will now stay open and close easily. Had them on for about 10 years now without issue.

Easy upgrade. Well worth it.

I picked my late 95 hinges used. Never had a problem with them. I painted mine black as they were factory white hinges. My Jeep is royal blue. 10 years later - my rattle can paint is flaking off some. But that's it.

My co-worker had a late 95 YJ. I documented some of the specific items it had. Nice Jeep!

I've only seen the 1pair of used 4 a '95. Must be scarce. That bad thing about used is they can be painted up nice, but can actually be shot. Depends on the seller. A guy would be rolling the dice...

$40 for a set? That's two rolls of the dice in AC.
