Help !!! Extremely loud knocking from the bottom of my jeep

I really need some ones help here.

I have a 1988 jeep wrangler 4.2l with about 188,000 kilometers on the tranny. It's a 5speed B A10 transmission.

There is a loud knocking/ rattling sound coming from either my transmission or the bottom of my engine. You can here it from a block away. It's ****ing loud... I just got ripped off by a mechanic thinking it was the clutch....... Any ideas would help ...... She shifts fine 1st 2nd 3rd it's loud knocking 4 none @ all and 5th you here it again .... In going crazy !

Does it knock in neutral? Get louder the faster you go?

My ''89 did that too. First thought it was the throw out bearing, so I also replaced the clutch and everything. No change. Bust I could figure out it was internal. Something in the tranny. I just swapped mine out. Seems to work now...

I'm not an expert on this trans, but I recently read that if you have noises in all gears but fourth, that the problem is inside the trans. Specifically in the countershaft since only fourth gear is direct drive. All others speeds go through gears on the countershaft.
It makes sense.

Recently had a similar problem in a friends 84 CJ. Except of course its a T-4 4speed, but similar scenario. I replaced the clutch for him put it all back together, same problem. thought I may have created an alignment problem. Pulled the trans and Tcase then reinstalled, same sound. Got pissed and let it sit for a few weeks. Looked at craigslist and found a T-4 for sale guy had upgraded to a T-176 medium duty. Got the trans for $200 bucks. At this point this was my third time pulling the trans and case in a 2 months period, I had it swapped and was driving it in 8 hours. Now my buddy has a new clutch, lower mileage trans, and I swapped all the fluids when I finished. Been running great for months now.

Yes. I have yet to crack the old tranny, but I figure it's something internal.
