HELP - what is this for

Ok this may be a totally idiotic thing to ask or may not but I cannot for the life of me figure out what this is for. All it does now is rattle around when I take a turn.

On the left with the 3 washers, it is on the skid plate under the transfer case.

this is what it looks like on top of the skid plate

Any input would be appreciated. All I can see it doing at the moment is annoying me.

if i'm not mistaken, a rubber spacer/bumper goes there. it almost looks as if it is on top. it's a shock system for the tranny to keep metal to metal contact from happening.

Navychief is correct. It should fit snug and not rattle. I know it looks a bit rusty, but you can try to tighten it up and that should fix the rattle.

Make sure that your drivers side motor mount is in good shape before replacing the transfer case torque mount. If the motor flops around a little, it will destroy those torque mounts in a hurry. I have even seen them rip through the crossmember itself. I mad my own "bombproof"' motor mounts as the local parts store replacements only last a few months. Good luck.
