Question Here is one for you guys.

Digging around on my new recently acquired YJ, touching up a few things, fixing a few minor issues when I ran across a bit of a problem that I need to address.

I found a small part of the frame rusted through. THis was in the center of the passenger rear shock hanger. THe shock hanger is also rusted pretty bad. So I know I need to grind out the rust and weld in some new steel. I already ground out the rust and painted over it with some rust inhibiter paint to just stop or slow the problem for now. My question is, where in the world can I find a new or aftermarket shock hanger to weld in to replace the old one?

Lt. there are a lot of threads on this topic you will find several folks just fab some patch plates and weld them to the outside of the frame some are quite creative, and others find some prefabed plates to weld on, they will also post some links for you to follow up on for some very helpfull tips for your repair, good luck and be sure to post a few pictures for us to check out. as far as the shock tabs go they are easy to replicate, Thank you for your service!

Thanks Guys. I am not too worried about the frame part, can fab up a plate to put there, was just wanting to get a professionally done shock tab for structural purposes. I only have about a 1 inch square hole there now and it is at the top inside corner, not too bad to fix, will search Morris and Whitney for the tab. Thanks again.

You caan't clean all the rust up inside a boxed frame so get some rust converter in spray and paiint brush out of a can. There are several products out there depeneds on the wallet and the amount fo work you are willing to do. Once that is odne if you can weld you acn fix any YJ out there. Good Luck send some pics just love to look at other work I may have to do soon. Thanks for your service LT I am a 30 year veteran AF Aircraft MX. Love the flightline in the morning at sunrise and miss it dearly you guys are great keep it going!!!

Thanks Jokerchief, I appreciate it. Also thanks for your service. Because of folks like you, we have our freedoms. I appreciate that very much. As for my rust problem, I treated it to stop it for now. Dupicolor has a pretty cool rust converter that turns rust to a paint-able surface. Seems to be working nicely. I also received my new shock hanger from Morris that I will install soon. Will take before and after pics when I go to do work. Looks pretty simple, Just need a couple of hours to take care of it.

OK, had some time today, so I cut out old and welded in new. Took off the old shock tab and made a patch plate, then welded it in and welded in the new shock tab I got from Morris. Was pretty easy, and not really all that time consuming. About 2.5 hours, Pictures will follow if I can figure them out.....

This was after cutting off the old tab, I didn't think about the picture till it was too late.

Here is the patch panel that I made being clamped on just before welding.

And the finished product.

This shock tab from Morris really was very nice and well built. Highly recomend them to anyone needing them.
