Hey

Hey guys, I'm new to the forums and pretty much new to the jeep world.
Anyways, I was just looking to see if you guys could give me any more tips that I have already read up on for buying this 1987 YJ I'm about to get.
I've looked around the forums (just a little bit) and I've looked online. I'm paying a bit of a high price ($6000) but I fell in love with this particular wrangler the moment I laid eyes on it.
Well, if you guys have any tips, advice, or warnings about

Gotta see pics of a $6000 87 yj! That sounds really high! Ive seen them anywhere from 2500-5000, and most of them were beat pretty bad.

Welcome to the forum. I would keep looking if I were you. Jeeps are all over craigslist so keep dont worry about letting this one go. I would look for a 92-95 with the 4.0 . Always be on the lookout for rust. Unless it was garage kept for most of its life, an 87 is sure to have some rust. Give us some more details and Im sure we can lead you in the right direction.

Always look for one with the 4.0. $6000 is just too much.

DR GOOWOOD, to give you a similar perspective I just bought an 1988 for $1,850. Here is what I got for the price:

Overall some rust but nothing serious
Exterior body is very clean
2000 Laredo 4.0 engine with 80k in it (fuel inject)
New exhaust
New auto tranny
Soft top in decent condition (probably replace it next season)
Good tiers

Needs a new transfer case (still evaluating options here for costs, between $300-800)
Needs air intake set up for the modified engine ($80 bucks, done)
Needs a little love in the interior (carpet and a good over all cleaning) ($130 for carpet $30 for cleaning supplies, done)
Some of the gauges don't work (normal for older jeeps though)

I hope that gives you a decent perspective on paying 6k for yours. I have been looking to buy a Jeep for a couple years now. I always had my eye open for that perfect one. It better be absolutely perfect condition for that price (in my opinion). I think I got a decent deal with my Jeep. I was mainly concerned with finding something mechanically sound. The cosmetics are the fun part to do yourself.

I am pretty new as well to Jeep ownership. This forum has been extremely helpful with everything from small things to the big things.

Let us know how things go! Send pics

Welcome to the Forum

I would have to keep looking. You can find one for a lot less and use the extra cash you'll save to fix any problems or modify it the way you want.

87 is the worst year for Jeeps. Trust me, I own one. Chrysler just sort of pieced them together to get something on the road. Buying replacement parts is near impossible because of some unique features, like the NP207 transfer case. My advice, pass on this and look for a later model that has the 4.0 in it.

Wow! Thanks for the quick replies guys. Anyways, a but more info... I live in northern california, wranglers seem to be in insanely high demand here. Not to mention that it is summertime. It's almost flaw less, except a small oil leak, it doesn't have power breaks, but many things have been replaced, but the New 33" ties do rub... It comes with 2 matching spares , a hard top and full doors. Being a student at berkeley and having two summer jobs does restrict my abilities to constantly wrench on it as it will be a daily driver..

it its also the 6cyl automatic. thanks for the help so far again everyone, this forum rules.
