Hot tub

Drove the jeep 380 miles today. The temp stayed around 210-220 and when I got hetero the tub around the tranny and drive shaft was really hot. Is this normal. 6Cyl 5 speed manual. 31" tires no lift stock wheels. Ambient temp in the 90°

its probably radiant heat from the exhaust/catalytic converter...exhaust temps can get as hot as 6-800 degrees is it gets run hard. On a hard pull up a long hill you can reach temps as high as 1000 degrees in the cat. They run 250-300 at an idle.

Thats good to know. I think the cat may be clogged anyway because it gets really sluggish under heavy load or up hill. I actually lose speed up some inclines

You can check the cat, the head pipe comes down and there are 4 bolts that hold it onto the cat. unbolt it there, and take it for a ride...its gonna be loud, but it will tell you if its clogged or not by the performance. if it looks original, the bolts are 5/16 X 1 1/4 long. you might want to get 4 new ones to bolt it back together. cause they will break when you try to take them off.

Mine has the universal style cat that is held in by ubolts. It is definitely the cat because it is rusted externally and when shaken it rattles. Picking one up at autozone in the morning and cutting off old one

Plus, you're in Georgia, right? Isn't it hot ambient temps there right now? I know it's been in the 90s here for the last few weeks and everything feels hotter...

Did replacing the cat improve your performance climbing hills? My 94 does the same thing... Just gets boggeed down and slows down as I climb. Have to downshift all the time. Also looking for ways to reduce the heat in the tub. Looking around for any good suggestion!

if you ahve a 2.5, many people experience those issues of hill climbing and stuff with stock jeeps.

if you have a 4.0, then something is definitely wrong.

if you have a 4.2, it could go either way when it comes to hill climbing.

i have only read about the 2.5 problems and 4.2 problems so i am just passing on info i have found. the 4.0 though, i have owned a number of jeeps with that engine and they climb like a goat. our 93 yj never had a bit of trouble in the texas hill country when we go to visit my parents and the summers are 90-100+ there
