How thick should I make my winch plate?

I plan to mount my winch in front of the grille on top of the bumper. I plan to make a winch plate to replace that piece of plastic with the Jeep logo that covers the gap between the grille and the bumper. I plan to make it wide enough to attach to the frame rails on both sides. How thick of a piece of steel should I use?

As Irongrave stated, most I have seen are at least 1/4 ". I would not go any thinner than that.

Harbor Fright sells a pre made winch plate already drilled for your frame for only 20$ its made of 1/4" inch steel. I use the same plate on my YJ with a warn 9.5ti winch.

I have overkill! Mine is 3/8 but I will say it doesn't even flex when using it. And it has a plate welded to the frame under it.
