i am puzzled

So its been about 5 weeks since I bought my jeep. After the first week I took it in to the shop to have a bunch of maintenance done including an oil change.
So im driving and I start hearing a clicking noise and so I check the oil. Turns out I didn't have any oil or at least the dip stick wasn't showing. I put almost 5 quarts of oil in little by little till it finally showed on the dip stick.
My jeep doesn't have any oil leaks at all. I know cause I have a clean drive way.
So my first thought was the mechanic shorted me on the oil. But I've bee using it for about a month and it ran fine. Im really puzzled.
the clicking noise went away as soon as I put oil in it. Vacuum pressure is really good.
What are your thoughts people? Is the 4.2 really bullet proof?

Bulletproof provided it has proper cooling and lubrication. If they didn't put any oil in it when it was changed , a month with no oil isn't good.

A 4.2 can take a lot of abuse but I don't know about no oil. The only thing you can do is check it once a week to see where it's at on the dip stick. Oil & filter it will take 6qts. If after a few weeks the oil is good then you know the shop forgot to put the oil in after it was drained. I always check my oil right after it's changed. I don't just trust the shop. I check for leaks around the filter and the oil pan drain bolt. If you find that the shop didn't add oil, then I suggest you find another shop. You should be checking your oil prior to going in and after it comes out. Also check it a lot more often. I would say that when you added oil and the "clicking" stopped you got lucky, probably no damage.
