Inexpensive to Expensive

Hi all. I bought my first jeep two years ago. I love it. While I only paid $1,000 for this YJ 4.0 manual - soft and hard top, 77,000 original miles, runs great, the rust is making me miserable. The back part of the frame is pretty well shot. I can still drive it but I'm getting more nervous every day. I bought some plates to weld around three sides but I don't even know if there is enough good metal on top to hold it all together.

I put $500 into new tires, bought floor new molded floor pans (haven't installed yet) so all up I only have about $1,650 into it. I'm trying to weigh up if it's worth trying to find a frame to transfer everything over. Some tell me it's too much work and of course I realize the domino effect when it comes to uncovering tired and/or rusty parts that should be replaced. Could turn into a money pit. Sad because the engine is so good and I love driving it.

I have four boys that suck up my money faster that pig pen clears sand out of a sand box so I need to be realistic about my next step.

Is it worth parting out? Not sure what the engine/tranny is worth.

not looking for much here other than venting to other Jeep lovers who might empathize.

I found a beautiful frame for $1,200 (motor mounts would have to be moved) but even that is probably out of my range.

Depending how far back the rot goes safe t cap makes pieces that you cut the old frame out and weld the new piece. Around 300 for the 2 back sections around the leaf springs mounts. That might be your ticket. If you do decide to part it out. You shouldn't have a hard time recouping a good portion of your money back. Just remember if you buy another one, guys are paying up to and over 6 grand for a yj without rust. So buying one for a 1,000 your definitely getting what you pay for.

I'm in the same boat. I got a killer deal on a TJ Sahara but it's because the frame and floor pans are shot. I paid $800. Since I had an original budget of $5k, I am hoping to be able to get everything fixed for that amount. If it can't be done, then I will flip it back for parts. This is my third Jeep and my first rule in buying Jeeps is staying away from rust buckets but the deal was too good to pass up. I will be subscribing to see what you come up with. Good luck!

I hear you. My dad basically gave mine back to me, otherwise I don't think it would be worth it for me to do all the necessary repairs. But I'm in the same boat, strong powertrain, rusty body/frame. Since you got it for such a great price, I'd just keep it and work on it over time. As soon as you sell it you'll find yourself looking for a new one and like the previous poster said, rust free jeeps aren't cheap.

Thanks all. I'll look into the caps. I have a friend who's a good welder/fabricator. I suspect he might be able to help me keep this one limping along.\

Thank you. I crawled under it tonight and I think the rust is too extensive. ouch. I'll hang on to it for now and keep my eye out for a frame.
