Is this how all yj's drive?

A few things seem funny on my 89 yj. As far as I know everything is stock besides a 2" bl and 33s. Motor is a 4.2 with a 5 speed manual trans. The first thing that seems weird to me is how fast first gear is. I have drove many manuals including a jeep tj and many other manual vehicles. It just seems fast for a "off road oriented vehicle". Also it seems like it has a locker in the rear. With the transfer case in 2wd it always want to jump and spin one tire around turns in parking lots at normal throttle. Is this normal? Just want to make sure nothing has been changed to make it drive like this.

Sounds like you may have different than stock gears. This will you to get more momentum on take off when climbing rocks or other obstacles. Especially with you having the 33" tires. As for the. Rear being locked, sounds like you may have a welded diff assembly. This is called a poor mans locker and is done when you weld the spider gears together. To verify if you do have a welded diff, simply pull off your diff cover and look. I would do this anyway since you don't know the maintenance history of the Jeep. While the diff is off, you can also count the teeth on your ring and pinion gears to see if they were upgraded.

Both items you have asked aboit are common upgrades that put you a step ahead on your Jeep. Good luck... oh and welcome to the forum.

Agreed with Turd... sounds like you have upgraded gears (probably 4.10/4.56/4.88) if you've got 33s and still have a lot of speed at start.
