I removed tailgate completely to go with a dirtworx rear bumper and tire carrier. will add in a custom made box that will go from backseat to just shy of hitting tire carrier when closed.

Tailgate storage isn't a good idea. Adds weight to the tailgate, causing the hinges to go bad, and when you close the gate, whatever you have protruding from it needs space inside the Jeep.

If you want a good storage area, think about putting a "lift kit" on your rear seat and adding a storage area under it.

I don't have mine built yet so no pics. But that is my plan. A box built under the seat, then mount a sliding drawer in it that is lockable. Gives you an out of sight secure storage area.

Would love to see pics of this! I like the way you think!

Not adding a log of stuff on the back just thinking of something that will hold a firs aid kit and some tow straps is all

StanF, That is where I originally got my idea from, But I wasn't paying $375 plus shipping to do that mod. I can build a HELL of a box for a lot less that $375... A 4X8ft sheet of 16ga steel is $45, and 2 sliders and a drawer lock totals $30. My time and my welder wire, and a few mounting bolts. I wont have $100 in it, and I guarantee that mine will be stronger and more "bulletproof" than that one.

I mounted (4) ammo cans laying on their sides, right on the wheel wells. Holds everything and is waterproof, plus makes a nice arm rest for whoever gets stuck in the back seat. I have straps, first aid kit, towel, and a full tool set. Best of all each box is lockable for when the top is off.

No pics cause it was many years ago on a CJ but, I made a box under the rear seat that was big enough in the front to hold a couple speakers and sloped down in the back. I bolted the back seat to it and hinged it so it would open for storage. In my present YJ I just made a cheap version of an insta trunk (see garage). It serves the purpose and was way cheaper than buying the real thing.
