Personally, I wouldn't want a 4 cyl. If it has 33" or larger tires, I'd want to know what lift was on it and if the axles were regeared. As far as the price, look up the kelly blue book for that year and model and go from there.

I bought my Jeep off of Craigslist and got a great Jeep and a great deal.
I looked at about 8 or 9 Jeeps from craigslist and another dozen or so dealer/private sales. I meet the guy in the Lowes parking lot then crawled around under the jeep poking and looking. Bring a flashlight (even during the day) a magnet and a I am only looking attitude.

The guy I bought mine from totally understood. Take a test drive up to hwy speeds and cut figure 8's in an open parking lot with 4wheel drive engaged. Check the fluids.

Never pay the asking price. I got mine for a 1,000 less than he was asking. remember the seller wants the most they can get and the buyer wants to pay the least the final price will be somewhere in between.

If the jeep is lifted check for vibrations hence a full hwy speed test drive. Also if the are other major mods done remember they were probably used. So don't by the "hey man the upgrades are already done " line.

So I guess my best advice is do your homework or take someone with you that has and leave your money at home this will give you a few extra minutes to think it over. Hope this helps.

118,000 on a 4cyl. i have a 4 cyl. in my 95 with a 131,000 on it and still going strong. if it was properly maintained the lil 4cyl can run forever.

Maybe just the way it appears in the pics, but the 97 looks like it has different colored doors. Make sure that the doors have a key also, not just the ignition key if different. I do like that you would get full doors and a hard top which is nice in bad weather. It also appears that he trimmed the fenders to allow the larger tires without doing a lift on it. Again, not a big deal.

As long as it has been well taking care of maintance wise you will be ok. But I would look for a 4.0 though, I wish I did the 4cyl is lacking power. So don't expect a speed demon or alot of get up and go. You will get about the same gas mileage out of a 6 as you would a 4. Just a thought

FWIW I got my jeep off of craigslist and got it for a steal. 1500 bucks and all it needed was brake cables and rear brakes. Guy was trying to start a business and needed to register several trucks at once. Not to mention he had an older Willys he was building up. I dont buy into the whole C-list is a scam thing. You get what you pay for and youre given a chance to check out the vehicle before hand, so if you buy a bad car its on yourself.

dang man, i should've got online this weekend. i would've went with you to check these jeeps out. i was in san antonio alot of yesterday and in rio frio since friday.

just go check them out and bring a car person with you. doesn't matter what kind of car they specialize in, as long as they know cars. they can check everything with you then as long as you make a check list of jeep specific areas to look at also.

I got mine off CL. I looked at a ton of junkers before I found one I wanted. I talked him down over 1k. he advertised it as perfect. Well it was not. I picked it apart and got the savings. Now honestly nothing I picked apart was a big deal and had he advertised it with the defects and for a reasonable price I would not have talked him down.

Before I wasted my time though I did my resarch. He had listed it 3 times in a month, lowering the price each time. So I knew he wanted it gone and that he was asking too much. You just have to try to read the people and see whats up.

My best advoce would be to buy it during the day, and before you go make sure the people have the title. 3 jeeps I looked at and spent 1-2 hours on and had negotioated the price on I got the "oh well, by the way I don't have the title here/yet/at all". I was pissed.
