Just finished the Howell TBI install

UPS delivered on Monday at about 1:00 and finished today at about 11:00. Installation went pretty smooth except the removal of the glove box, it had 4 phillips head screws in from the back side, they are a bear to get out, I used hex head when I put it back together. Got a nice bath with gas when cutting the gas line.
Other than that followed the directions, had one question called Howell and got a quick answer, very helpful and friendly. The charcoal canister was plumbed wrong causing a vacuum leak..
I replaced a Weber that was only 2 months old, with it I had starting problems and flooding after driving for a while, poor mpg.
The Howell starts easy when cold or after driving and seems to have a lot smoother response when accelerating. I will have to check the mpg. I paid $1285.00 for the Howell kit, only additional items were the air filter, from Ebay $45.00, and check engine light from Ebay $5.00. And don't forget the beer 30 pack of Coors $20.00 Probably going to have a larger trash bill this month having them haul off all the sh*t I removed from under the hood....
I will take it for a longer test drive later.. Should have done this in the first place rather than the Weber, I'll try to sell it on CL.

Where'd you purchase from for $1,285? Also let us know how your first smog test goes.

Quadratec did a price match with Collins Bros Jeep, out of Texas and no shipping or sales tax. Funny thing is I live in area of the mountains east of San Diego and we do not have to resmog, just when we purchase. It starts a whole lot easier, and is a lot smoother under acceleration, no hesitation, seems to hold speed a lot better when going up a grade, less down shifting.

What make, model, and year is the air cleaner? Love my Howell, but want a better air cleaner than the Edelbrock paper filter that I have now.
Thanks!

I got it off Ebay $46.88. You will need a small spacer to clear your valve cover. And a gasket to seal between spacer and air cleaner. I cut 3 inches off the longer (from the mounting bracket) side of the tube and put the shorter end of the tube towards the throttle body this allowed it to line up with a bolt on the valve cover. Then cut the mount bracket to length and bent it, made a great fit.

figures that is an ebay air cleaner.... that joint/weld down the middle is absolutely an eye sore.... how hard would it have been to run that weld across a sanding belt...

It must be very hard cause the companies that do run the sander down the weld charge a bunch more money, for the savings I don't mind the weld, I spent quite a bit on the Howell kit and had to cut corners somewhere, I guess you could do a lot better on welding one up. I wish I could weld that good.
I kind of like the look, a little more rugged looking.

Smog laws in California are uniform for the entire state, they do not differ by county, so you will be required to re-smog every two years in order to keep it registered (unless you're in the military and it's registered in your home state). The good news is that the Howell TBI is legal in CA, but you will still have to pass emissions.

Unknown to a lot of people some areas like we live are exempt from the 2 year renewal, I don't understand but they go by zip codes. I have not had to resmog in over 12 years. But if I should move or get pulled over I am in compliance.

Wow, I learned something new today. There are actually quite a few counties (about 20) that are exempt from the biennial smog checks. And I didn't know that some have enhanced restrictions while others have basic. And I'm lucky enough to live in a zip code with the enhanced/strictest laws. Ugh

Like us it is a small area within the county. Isn't California great, check out the gas prices today over 4.00 gl for regular, while in Arizona under 2.50 gl.
Like the look and color of your YJ...

White jeeps rule! I wish I could afford to do the Howell TBI, my carb needs to be replaced so I may see what the price difference is. I will have to pay a shop to do it, so neither will be cheap. I did the Team Rush upgrade on my distributer by myself, that was simple enough. And it passed smog.

Very nice mod ! My wife's 1990 Wrangler has the Howell on it as well only her's is automatic. The only thing Ive noticed is there is no passing gear. I've no idea if this is a result of the upgrade or something else - - - - anyone have an idea ? ? ?
Thanx

Passing gear is normally controlled by linkage from the carb or thottle body going down to the tranny, might just be adjustment.
