Looking at my first Jeep, anyone care to look at this listing?

Wife and I have wanted an old(er) Jeep to drive on weekends. Maybe teach my kid stick shift in the future. Take camping. No frills. Not afraid to work on it, but would rather spend money up front now to have something that runs ok and is in ok cosmetic shape.

Things I know to look for: make sure all gears shift smooth, make sure 4x4 engages, check all the lights and electrical, bang around underneath and look for excessive rust or leaks.

This guy looks pretty stock. It's got the inline 6. Lower miles. Red is perfect.

It's a nice looking ride, you have named all the stuff that I would have recommended but while checking on the rust make sure where the leaf springs connect to the frame is good. Price is your call, everyone has there thoughts on it but your the one paying for it. If your budget is 10K then that opens up to a lot of different Jeeps. I personally like the YJ's and I like the square headlights. I have a friend looking for one now and his budget was less than 5K and now he is up to 7K range trying to find what he wants. I do like the paint job that was done on that one, if all is good and under 100K miles and mechanically and body and frame is good then I'd be good with it. Good luck on your search.

looks very clean and well cared for. any word on if a top is included? I looked at the pics and did not read the add so please excuse me if noted. consider looking into a cost for a soft top if no top is included and see if an offer minus the cost for a decent soft top would be considered.

I looked around for a while to find my 93 with 89k miles and had to drive two hours plus and trailer it home. I paid $8k for mine that was lifted soft top for a basis. not as clean as that one, but the top was in great shape.

That’s a lot of $ for 91? I’m also in CA and picked mine up for $3500 with 92k miles on it, cosmetically had a few dings but was bone stock and taken care of...I’d keep looking if I were you. But if you have to get it from a dealer and finance, you will pay more(even if it’s not worth that much?) it is clean for sure!

I'm really stunned by the breadth of prices I've seen. It's likely the Los Angeles yuppie tax. I'll keep looking, but I'll go check this one out. Don't need to finance, so maybe I can haggle down.

It looks like there might be a top in the back seat area, but I don't see any channels on the tub for the top to attach to.
That makes me think the Jeep might be a recent repaint. Red is the quickest color to fade and this Jeep is too shiny for a 1991 model.
Plus, I don't see any decals or badges.
Look for bits of overspray on the door handles and windshield rubbers. A repaint isn't bad, in and of itself, but dealers always get the cheapest paint jobs. The paint job only has to last until the dealer sells the vehicle.

Have the dealer fit the top so that you can just how it fits and that all the hardware is there, plus check the condition of the windows, zippers and fabric. Check out Quadratec or Morris 4X4 for complete top assemblies (top and top frame). If the jeep doesn't have a GOOD top, you need to know how much you're looking at for a top.

No carpets, some of us like to run without carpets.

Is the console mounted backwards? It doesn't appear to have a drivers door check strap. Do the interior lights come on when you open either door?

Most important is to follow batjacks advice and check the frame, underneath the floor and body mounts for rust.

I think $10K is way on the upper end as far as price goes, but if it works for you, go for it.
Ask the dealer if it's OK to take the Jeep to your mechanic. For a $10K 27 year old vehicle Mr. Dealer should have no problems. If he balks, walk away.

If the vehicle checks out, I'd offer $7K (tell him you have cash) and see if he bites. If yes, you have your Jeep. If no, go home and await a counter offer.

$10K ain't no bargain. It might be the going price for such a vehicle in your area, but I hate paying retail for anything.

Good Luck, L.M.

While I don't believe in the fairy tale Jeep for under $5k I do believe this one is over priced by a lot. I would wager the seats are ripped up under those covers and while one of my Jeeps runs without carpet, I don't like it. The new paint is very questionable. I bought a freshly painted Suburban out of the south and it wasn't even clear coated. In your area I am sure you can do better. Look more inland. Phoenix - Vegas

I have heard 137 stories to date of people getting the perfectly clean, unmolested YJ for under 5k. Over a four year period of time I looked religiously every day across the entire country for YJs. I have purchased two of them. The last one was the nicest. It is a 91 purchased last summer with 115k miles. 4.0, auto, 2.5" lift, 5 brand new tires, hard top and full doors, factory ac, nicely recovered seats, freshly rebuilt axles and driveshafts (with receipts) and it was CLEAN. I paid $7500 and felt like I should have been wearing a ski mask (minus the fact that it was 115 degrees in Phoenix that day).

I was in the same boat six years ago. Knew nothing about these vehicles except I wanted one. Found a redone YJ on Craigslist that looked real good I think for $8000. It was about 100 miles away and I was going to look that weekend.
I was in a parking lot and noticed a owner approaching a YJ. I asked him how he liked it and told him about the one on CL. He said the price was way too high. He had the YJ 10 years as an RV dinghy and had recently replaced it. He was just driving it around to charge the battery. It was all stock except the rims. He said he'd sell it for $2500 but he had to check with his kids first.
Next day my phone rang.

Yeah, I stole it.

Very nice YJ, and to get it for $2500! Right place / Right time is a great feeling.

Nice looking YJ in great shape and mileage is pretty good for a 27 year old ride. The price is definitely too high. $5,500 - $6,000 max! Good luck with your decision.

Well I checked it out today. Arizona Jeep, almost perfectly rust free, engine is smooth and pulls great, all rubber healthy, all gears smooth, 4H and 4L pop straight in, all electrical works, paint job is tight, all mounting points underneath look solid. Needs a new soft-top and seats/seat-covers, carpet inserts, check straps, and some mild TLC. Going to send a mechanic to kick the tires next.

I agree with L.M.
Too much, but I would expect that from a dealer. They have “haggling room” built in. Like he said, offer $7,000 cash. I bet you get it close to that.
Make sure to tell them “The first thing I’ll have to do is buy a new top”.
