Looking for a new soft top.

Hi everyone, as you can see I'm new here. I actually just bought my YJ about 2 weeks ago. I've been looking at everything and it looks like the soft top is going to need to be replaced fairly soon. I know it is a bestop supertop and I've found some of them online but they're like 470.00 just for the fabric replacement.

Is there a more affordable solution than dropping almost 500.00 by buying Bestop?

If you want new, thats about the only game in town. If you just cant drop that kind of money, keep a running search for one on Craigslist. Save a hundred or more depending how used it is.

Ill let the frameless top fanboys have their say so now. Even though they make your jeep look anencephalic

I have the hardware for the super top, and I found some much less expensive tops that use the factory hardware.

My hardware will not work for one of those tops will it?

you are seriously comparing a jeep to a baby that is missing a major portion of its brain and scalp?!?!?!? As an uncle to a baby that has serious brain damage I take extreme offense to this comment! I see a lot of comments you have made and have NEVER been more offended!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just to be "that guy" I will say I think the frameless tops look awesome, I think it's a very viable option for the fact that you can fold up throw it in the back and not have to worry about the frame. Personally I think the frame is a pain in the ass and is useless when you have a useable rollbar to support a soft top. Your Going to spend about the same though so just keep in mind if you find a price that's cheaper your going to get what you pay for!

It looks like this top may be repairable. I just need to restitch the 2 zippers that are starting to come off. What kind of thread should I use to do this?

Ive seen fishing line used to good effect. Both braided and monofilament. The heavier stuff.

So i restitched the 2 spots that were coming loose and that definitely helped. This top has seen better days though so I guess I was just checking to see if another brand would fit the supertop frame.

Hey Flint,

I've been in that seat before with Bestop. The original replacement top will NOT work with their frame, so you are stuck. re-stitching zippers is a good cheap repair and works well, I also recommend braided/ monofilament/ UV resistant thread (headliner thread and needles work great). This however does NOT work well on blown seems, the buffeting from driving down the road will rip those out in minutes flat.

Here are some options:

- Go with generic OEM style and check local ads/ Craigslist/ junkyards for original soft top frame. I DO NOT recommend the Smittybuilt top due to weak zippers (not YKK).
- Be sure to select the right one, there are several types (for full doors, half doors with squared uppers, and half doors with rounder uppers).
Also, Replacement OEM style frames are on Amazon for about $300 (Link: http://amzn.com/B000FPY59W) and OEM style replacement skins for another $300 so that your NEXT top will only be $300

- Go with the Bestop replacement top skins for about $480
- Go with the bowless system (Home page) for about the same, $450.
- Find someone who has a slightly less screwed up top for sale.

Hope this helps.
