I know someone with a 2000 TJ, 2.5, which I believe is the same engine as the 97..they got a noticeable power increase with a ram-air system, performance plugs and wires, and a performance coil..although the first few days with the jeep was being pretty touchy. If it has the restrictor in the air intake like a YJ engine ( https://www.wranglerforum.com/f8/inta...mod-33757.html ) taking that out may help.. Beyond that, exhaust, headers, who knows. Expensive engine work. I'm sure other people have better ideas, and more of them.

its probably as god as its going to get with out trying to do really expensive mods such as turbos and boring it u cant expect awesome performance from it although that's not to say that motor dosent have power already and that coil is not really going to help that much those performance coils only help keep a cleaner spark at high performance cases such as over standered operating revs so on a street machine not really going to help that much

To that I've just gotta say-Depends on how you drive it :P The coil won't be worth it if you aren't shifting at or close to the redline alot...but if you are, it's actually fairly worth it. And hell, that little 2.5 can walk a big turbodiesel...as long as the drivers right, and the driver in the turbodiesel isn't.

4.0 throttle body, port match the intake, and free flow muffler. you said you have intake work so do a muffler. like others mentioned those high dollar race coils are designed for high compression high revving engines and will do little for you but lighten your wallet.

get a regular performance muffler like a turbo muffler or a thrush, you know those cheapies at pepboys to try out. or spend some dough on a nice stainless magnaflow. im not a huge fan of flowmaster, had both magnas and flowmasters on my mustang and the flowmasters where raspy and tinny while the magnas where deep low and very refined in sound. im sure ill be replacing my thrush with a magnaflow.
also my cat suffered meltdown and was replaced by a straight pipe along with thrush so its a little louder than stock. im sure thrush would be quiter with a cat but no cat is loud. just wantyou to know.

Biggest change in performance would come from a gear change to 4.56 or better.
