New California Mod laws

I understand that in Ca. they enacted a new Law starting Jan 1. that vehicles with any Non Stock Exhaust, Emissions, Engine, Mods can be issued citations that are no longer fixit tickets, but Mandatory $1000 dollar fines and a trip to the BAR (not local watering hole) to have entire vehicle inspected for compliance, and vehicles returned to stock before allowed on the road again. Law Enforcement can use loud exhaust, lift kits and flashy wheels as probable cause for further inspection.

Apparently this was enacted to cut down on the street racing and "street takeovers" etc

Has anybody been involved with this yet, maybe you can elaborate on how intense this new law is and what the ramifications are for residents, and non residents traveling in Ca.

This could mean a lot of Ca. Jeepers will be either buying Trailers to get to trails, or stock jeeps in Ca will become worth a lot more...

I replied to this in the other thread, "Going back to stock". This is only for cars registered in CA. What pisses me off is, it does not include motor cycles, they are the louder one. As long you stay under 95db you will be fine.

What a crock of shit! I did not hear that? If that’s the case then try getting all the Harleys to comply! Ca, sometimes, is not where I want to be.

Relax. Yes there's a new law against excessively loud exhausts and emissions systems that have been deleted. No one is going to cite your lifted YJ... (Heck I run without a front plate and I workout with the local police captain...)

No, there is no new law, this law has been in affect since 1998. They only changed how it is enforced.

That was my impression about their exhaust modification law as well. I believe they also have a law in place in regards to ride height, too low or too high. Then there's fender flare to tire clearance as well.

This law for the has been on the books for a very long time, just tweaked a little to move from fixit to a real ticket. This was done to help fight the street racers, now it’s more difficult to just swap out the exhaust, get the ticket signed and swap back. The BAR trip is for those that believe their exhaust is below the limit and want it verified. The first offense is $25 plus $193 fees. The second offense will cost you. It was, and still is legal to modify your exhaust system, just has to be under 95dB. There’s a lot of misinformation going on about this law. There are several free phone apps the measure dBs if you are concerned, don’t know how accurate they are.

This. It's a 20 year old law.

Under existing law, exhaust systems installed on motor vehicles with a manufacturer’s gross vehicle weight rating of less than 6,000 pounds, other than motorcycles, may not exceed a sound level of 95-decibels when tested under Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) test procedure J1169 (May 1998). This was not changed by A.B. 1824.

A.B. 1824 amended how excess exhaust noise violations are handled by law enforcement. Beginning this year, a vehicle cited for violating the current exhaust noise law will no longer receive what is known as a “fix-it” ticket. Instead, violations will result in an immediate fine.

Back in the 80’s, I had a few Cal style bugs and lowered them all. I got fix it tickets all the time for headlights too low. Now, with a Jeep and tires hanging outside of the fenders with no flares on the front I’ve never been stopped(knock on wood). Maybe it’s because I have very little hair on my head anymore, maybe it’s the salt and pepper in my facial hair, maybe law enforcement respects the Jeep community- I don’t know? All I know is that I’m not concerned about it too much but would be pissed if I got anything more than a fix it ticket.

I hate California, but so as the recent crack down on emission removal and ecm tuning, the exhaust noise is next people. Federal government involvement eventually will really complicate the issue.

The price of pre-smog year vehicles will skyrocket!!!

If it was not for my kids, I would be so out of this state in a heart beat!

Yeah their moto is “loud pipes save lives”. I’m an avid motorcyclist and own several street and dirt bikes. Most have aftermarket exhaust but nothing obnoxious! And I can’t stand that Harley crowd noisy shit!

Yeah, not knocking the Harley’s or any bikers but the excessively loud revs splitting lanes when you aren’t expecting it scares the crap out of me sometimes! I know it’s how they like them.

The ones that constantly rev at the light, speed off and give the throttle a couple quick blurps...... of the ones who split lanes and when they think there is no space, they rev up so you move.... like I have to give them the right away..... I never move......

WHAT? I love nothing more than slipping into my pirate outfit, heated leather thong, buttless chaps, vest with snap chains to fit my 63" beer belly, covered in 26 pounds of assorted pins and running to my local bar setting off car alarms as I go! You should try it. It's fricking awesome!!!
FWIW, I do ride a Harley, equipped with very mellow sounding Supertrapps and it is quite pleasant. I too hate straight pipes, even if they do save lives.

I also own a big Harley and love it as much as my Jeep. I've added some mellow pipes to make it a bit louder. Yep. They help.

LOL. Yeah, I would never wear something like that. I always wore boots no matter the temp. I don't want shredded flesh for feet if I ever got into an accident.

Those are cowboy flip-flops.

I wonder what some Colorado redneck cowboy would have to say about them at the local western bar.

Good Luck, L.M.

Say what you will.... a ticket for exhaust over 95 db is the most reasonable law I've ever heard of coming out of cali.... I have absolutely no problem w that and would happily support making that nation wide...

This obsession so many americans have with forcing the public around them to endure their noise all hours of the day and night is ridiculous....

There is absolutely no reason at all that a vehicle can't perform great and still be quiet....

I've long said that if you want to hear your own exhaust then point it at YOUR ears instead of mine....

Now if you want to complain about cali, let's talk GAS CANS!
