Angry New guy on the block

I purchased a 1986 Wrangler YJ. The engine had been changed. It is now an inline 6cy. Fuel injected, 5 speed manual. I am now haveing running issues. It looses power, sputters to a stop. I can get a restart after a short time, runs very rough, runs normal a shot time, them repeats. One problem is how do I identify the year of the engine and other engine info?

Thanks Heaps!

Have you done a tune up on it? Cap, rotor, plugs, wires, fuel filter, also while your at it you can replace the tps its only a 40 dollar part and its two bolts holding it on.

?????????????

First, we have to figure out what you have. What shape are the head light, round or square? Jeep didn't produce Wrangler YJs until 1987. If yours is fuel injected, chances are It's a 4.0L H.O. swap or it's newer than you think. Does it have a family style roll cage(Does it go over the back seat)? Just trying to determine what your working on. And go from there.

Also, run a "free VIN check". It will give basic info on your Jeep, like year, model, engine and such. The early Wranglers also have a trans code in the VIN.
