New Jeep owner (hopefully)

I came across a 1995 4WD Sahara for sale in my area and I am seriously considering purchasing. The vehicle is for sale at a dealership about 20mi away and I plan to look it in person tomorrow.

This would be my first Jeep purchase and I'm interested in any tips/advice from owners of older Jeeps on things I should look for and questions to ask prior to buying. I plan on having it inspected as a contingency of the sale.

Here are some of the specs:

Mileage: 112k
Carfax: 2 owners; both appear to be in NC
4 minor accidents reported; no collision damage
According to dealer: New tires; brakes in "great condition"
Add-ons: appears to be lifted with some after market fog lights

Picture is attached. List price is $9,985 (approx 40% above blue book)

Thanks in advance!

If I were looking for a YJ these are the things I would look for:

Rust:
Frame rails near shackle points
Floor pans
Roll bar bases behind seats
Windshield
Cross-member above & behind fuel tank

Years:
91-95 for fuel injection

Engine:
2.5 if your keeping it stock
4.0 if you have intentions on lifting it and running larger tires.

Modifications:
Stock so I had a clean slate to work with, thus not having to deal with improperly installed modifications that you see all too frequently on YJ's.

Mileage:
Obviously the lower the better

Wiring:
Ensure the PO hasn't cobbled up the wiring under the dash for his janky stereo install, etc.

It appears clean but check the frame. If there is scaling and you can pick it off with a fingernail pass.

Welcome to the Forum dmm9979,

Ten Grand seem like a lot, even for a clean '95.

That said, 1995 has the preferred dual diaphragm brake booster and the preferred external slave cylinder.
The Jeep in the picture has full doors which may or may not add any value for you.
A hard top equipped YJ usually sells for more than a similar YJ with a soft top.
For ten grand, or even close to that amount, I'd expect the Jeep to be in darn near new condition. Look for cobbled up stereo wiring.

As stated above check the frame carefully for rust. Have the dealer put the Jeep up on a rack so that you can take a close look for rust and possible leaks.

Hopefully the dealer is pricing the Jeep to make a home run. When you look at it and if it matches your expectations, don't appear to be all excited. Offer a much lower price and if you have cash let the dealer know. Just don't let him know how much cash you have. I'd offer $6K (close to BB value). If the dealer doesn't take your offer, don't be afraid of walking away. If the dealer doesn't get a buyer in a week or so, he just might call you and take your offer.
Is there really a book price on a 24 year old vehicle?

Good Luck, L.M.

Is ANY amount of rust ok or should I stay away completely? I took a look at it today and there are a few small rust spots (see pictures). Did not look underneath yet however the dealer said he'd let me take it by my mechanic so have it fully inspected.

It has some other expected wear and tear but drives great.

I wouldn’t concern my self with those areas too much, the biggest concerns are the areas that I notated above.

Crawl under it your self with a flashlight look in the inner and outer portions of the frame rails where the shackles attach, pull the carpet up everywhere, etc, etc.

Some clear POR 15 will stop the areas you took photos of from getting worse.

The cheapo long shackles need to go

Jk wheels with adapters?

IMHO I'd say it is WAY overpriced...

The most important rust you are looking for is INSIDE the frame... flaking off and getting thin or worse yet rusted all the way through to the outside and starting to have holes...
