Had a cable of theirs snap on me once and the when the clutch is released to free spool it's still very stiff and hard to reel out. I have a 1st gen Superwinch lp8500 and I absolutely love it. My only complaint is the solenoid mounting but that has been corrected with the second gen. 8500lb pulling force, great value, and warranty. 94ish feet of cable (I don't remember exactly). But all around a great product For just under 400$

if you are going to spend money for a winch, get a good one. I know some people who have the Smittybuilt and really like them, but they are made in China and QA isnt so hot. I would stick with Warn, Superwinch (as mentioned) etc. You want a winch that is going to be there for you when you need it!

My Smittybuilt xrc8 has NEVER let me (or others) down. warn is nice, but expensive. My winch was $300 and I am very impressed with it, regardless of it being made in china. I couldn't justify paying double the price for a warn. If you have the money, obviously warn is best. If you are on a budget Smittybuilt is the best bang for your buck. My 0.02

Double? haha almost triple. I am going with a smittybuilt or a Rugged Ridge just trying to decide...

I've never heard anything bad about the ramsey winches. You can get a decent one for right around $400.

I haven't heard a ton about rigged ridge, but many people use the smittys, including myself, and love them. IMO smittys bumpers/tops/rockers/etc seem to be unreliable and poor quality, but they seem to make very reliable winches at an unbeatable price. Smitty gets my vote

The Warn VR8000 is like 480 or so. Plus they have an $80 mail-in-rebate going on right now... I'm opting with that over the XRC-8 to throw on my new bumper I have heard plenty good things on the XRC-8 though.

what about the silverback series from promark? I just ordered a 8,000 pd silverback. Its a fully submergable winch and comes with two wireless remotes as well as a 12ft control. i paid $445 for the winch, fairlead, yj mount plat, two wireless remotes, and the 12ft remote. that maybe one to look at if ur wanting to save some money..

I'm going to keep my vote on Superwinch because I've had such good luck with mine and the second generation is much better then the first that I have. It's 80$ over the smittybilt and has a life time warranty on all the hard parts. I believe the lp8500 is the best bang for your buck. Yes there are cheaper winches out there but for not that much more you can have a much nicer winch with a much more respectable name. Now the post made above about smittybilt having good luck with winches and bad luck with bumpers ect., I'm on a completely different page. I experienced and heard nothing but bad things about smittybilt winches but I run the xrc stinger and looking into a rear bumper from them. Have a smittybilt winch recovery kit, grab handles, d rings and love all the "hard" parts they make. Wouldn't trust their electronics

the only one i can find new is the ramsey rep 8.5e. what i would do is keep an eye out on Craigslist for someone getting rid of a ramsey Rep 8000, i just got one for 350 shipped.

You could also check out the Mile Marker SEC8. Its a 8000lbs winch by an American company thats been building winches for years. Ive seen the SEC8 for $289 to $330 depending on the retailer and the shipping. (Included or not)

Something to think about.

The new quadratec catalog was advertising a new series of Warn winches which start at $479.99 ($399.99 after mail-in rebate) for the 8000lb winch. I was looking at the smittybuilt XRC8, but for a little more money I'd rather have the Warn. I think its a Warn VR8000 if i recall correctly and someone is interested.

It is the VR8000, I'm actually getting this over the XRC8. It's a little more but... it is a Warn.

MN wrangler has a point. I have the mile marker8000 on one of my jeeps and it has been through hell, still strong. Its pulled out duallys and big some pretty big rigs without even slowing down.
