Newbie Question

Hey All- Just got my first Jeep and am ready to enjoy the summer! I know the jeep I picked up is a a bit rough for an 89' Sahara 5 speed, but she'll do. I have been finding lots of little things previous owners have modified/rigged and theres a few questionable things. First and foremost, the things rides like a tank! I know Jeeps have a rougher ride but this thing beasts the hell out of ya. I crawled under and noticed that someone put a set of rough country shocks on it at some point, but from what ive read i don't gather that be the problem. The next thing i noticed is someone flipped the leaf springs to the top of the axle. Now, long story short, did this over-slung conversion effect my ride quality in any way, or are the shocks just shot? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Jeeps ride rough. Especially with leaf springs like ours. I run 18-20 psi in the tires it helps. Just don't whip around corners with air lowed on the street and you'll be fine. From what I hear a non gas shock will soften ride a bit. Spring over axle is a great mod if you off road for more clearance. Mine are stock so not sure if that would affect ride. A little less weight on springs so it may? 2-3 pounds plus or minus will make a lot of difference so you'll have to experiment a bit. Welcome to the jeep life!

a leaf over conversion will make the ride more rough because the leaf springs are doing most of the absorbing instead of the shocks, the shocks are probly expanded to much to serve there purpose and some shocks will cause a rougher ride, my last jeep was like that but i only took it off road

I have a 6.5" spring over and it rides as smooth as it did before I lifted it. If they are aftermarket springs, that could be your problem.

I ^ agree. Its the springs. I've done several spring overs and have not had a problem with a rough ride before / after. Leaf springs are stiff or soft. That simple. I used to go to a spring shop close by that could take stiffness out, put it back in, take lift out. Just an idea. If you have aftermarket springs, theres a good chance they are of the stiff varity.
