OEM center console cover

The lock unit finally busted out of the cover of my oem center console (1995 YJ) a few days ago. I've tried to jury-rig it in several ways, none of which have proved very... stable.

Spent a little time this morning calling junkyards -- nobody seems to have the console covers parted out or even has much for stock consoles at all. There are a couple roughed up whole units selling on eBay so I guess I could snag one of those as a last resort, but if I'm going to spend that kind of money I thought it might be worth upgrading...

Unfortunately it seems like the only aftermarket option that will fit a 95 YJ with stock seats and allow the lift motion to happen unencumbered is the Tuffy 6.5" (most "for YJ" models appear to be 8" or wider, as older YJs apparently had different clearance?) and it's $250 which is a bit rich for me. And tbh I actually don't hate the oem console, though having a proper arm rest might be nice.

Any suggestions? Is there some secret cache of OEM console covers I haven't yet stumbled on? I know the lock isn't good for much as far as security goes, so hey, maybe I'll even just make some sort of cover that makes it being missing seem less obvious? Thoughts or ideas welcome! Thanks in advance.

OEM center console cover

The seats sit a little closer in the later YJs due to the folding mechanism in the passenger seat, so 6.5 is definitely the way to go. I was hesitant to buy the Tuffy for a long time, but pulled the trigger.

I have to say...its awesome. HUGE step up from stock. The arm rest is at the right height, the pad is great, the locking mechanism is the best you can buy, and the cup holders are actual useful for cups.

This wont make you feel any better, but I gave away my stock console after I realized how flimsy it was.

Id say its worth the price!!

Honestly looks great and I've heard good things from others (and wow, unlike all the other consoles, it even fits!) but $250 is still a sizable chunk of change for me.

I kept up with ebay for a few months on this one. I have as small crack in mine so I wanted to replace it. I ended up just fixing the crack and it's been going strong for the last 2 years.

These are exposed rigid plastic= many are destroyed at this point.

I had the same experience: All the ones on ebay are pretty junked up (as an aside, I had the same experience trying to find an old school YJ Sahara tire cover on ebay...I ended up with a spice and khaki one.)

I'd say if you don't mind it not being oem, just go aftermarket.

Thanks for this thread. Mine is not OEM, and it's literally a garbage piece of plastic held it by two little screws. It's a good place to put anything you want stolen.

PO put an 8" model in mine, and I DO NOT like it. I can still flip the seat up, but it's really tight. I'm with OP on the price too. For that much money, I'll just deal with what I have.

It's not all bad, I have cup holders, and the lock is good. It's not tall enough to be an effective armrest though.

I have a Smittybilt console and Bestop seats (the least expensive Bestop seats that they sell).
The console is eight inches wide and fits just fine with my seats. There's no extra room between the seats and the console, but I can fold each seat forward and back with no interference.
No problem with the seat belts either.
The console was $100.00, but is probably $125.00 by now. I'm real happy with the setup. My wife made the cover to match the inserts in my half door panels. The seats are black denim but look grey probably due to the flash.

Good Luck, L.M.

@Luckymac Do you like the stereo placement?? I considered this, but ultimately went with the normal Tuffy. As lame as it sounds, I get annoyed having to lean forward to change the volume/track...

Normally I listen to talk radio, so typically just one station.
The volume control is within easy reach so I don't even have to take my eyes off the road (a good thing).

If I wanted my stereo in the dash, the console is the perfect place for a CB radio.

Good Luck, L.M.

That arm pad is snazzy! Nice work by your wife.
