Opinion on a spray can paint job?

I know there's Jeepers that have done it. I'm thinking of doing it to my jeep. Any recommendations? Tips? I'm going to repaint the jeep white after I do some bond work. I was thinking good prep obviously, Few coats of white primer, few coats of white paint, then clear coat?

In my very limited experience, I had passable results with spray can paint, and really lousy results with spray can clearcoat. The finish had the texture of an orange peel... sand it smooth, re-coat, more orange peel...

I used rustoleum paint, can't remember the brand of clearcoat from Home Depot.

Honestly if your going to do that spend the 40 bucks on a gun from autozone..find a buddy with a compressor and go for it......take the time to do the prep work and it'll look so much better...I rattle canned my 90 xj and regretted it.....it's really really hard to make it look good....just my .02

I've touched up a few vehicles with spray paint.

White is the easiest color to match up. No joke, I have a White minivan that the paint had been chipped on and it had started rusting over. I took a mouse sander and sanded the hell out of it to remove the rust and get rid of the rough edges. I then got a cheap Walmart brand can of gloss white paint and sprayed over it. It was uncanny how well the paint blended with the original 10 year old paint job. I'm talking so well, no one can tell it was ever dinged and painted over. I cannot even find any difference and I'm the one that painted it.

It's held up for about a year now....

Other colors like black, they are very hard to match up, you can always tell newer from older, even with exact match colors. I need to touch up my Jeep but dread the color matching.

Spray paint on parts yes. On full body no. Your never going to have even costly you will be able to notice easy. Better off going to maaco. They will do your whole car for around $300 with clear and everything professionally

I have a compressor. I can do the gun. I think my uncle has one I can borrow.

I got an estimate from mako (or is it macco?) for about 500 bucks. But I heard they're prep work and masking is not the greatest

That Maaco job is going to be terrible and doesn't include any prep or body work. Your better off just getting a sprayer and making a booth out of plastic and scrap wood and doing it yourself. There are a lot of right-ups out there about painting Jeeps and some even roll on Rustoleum. The trick is to avoid the dreaded orange peel. Its just paint so its not like its permanent. Or you can be like me and use bedliner on the whole thing and touch it up with a rattle can every year or so.

Yeah, they said $450 will get me a sealer and white paint. No sanding really and no clear coat or anything.

How many cans of paint am I looking at if I do spray cans?

How much money is the paint to spray on with a gun? Where would I buy that?

My neighbor did his YJ in white right in his garage with a makeshift booth out of plastic and a spray gun with compressor and it came out killer. The guy who did it wasn't a pro at all, just two guys with a lot of time on their hands

I painted my hood using black fusion satin paint, between coats I went over it with fine steel wool for that flat black matte look and it came it pretty cool.

good luck and post the results!

Hmmm hard decision. I will post the results! but I probably wont be painting it for another month.

How many cans are needed to paint the Jeep? would it cost less to buy the gallon of paint and spray it on with a gun?
