Painting doors only? Options?

Hi folks!

Last season I did a bunch of bodywork on my jeep, took care of all kinds of rust... came out great! Except unfortunately I learned (the hard way) that matching paint is hard and that I suck at painting. Turns out I have one of these impossible colors (a sort of metallic champagne) that even though I have the color code, I seem to be unable to get a paint that matches exactly -- possibly due to fading. I've been through 3 different vendors, the last of which is a local paint shop which did a custom mix and got it as close as I've seen. I think it's further complicated by the fact that it's a metallic so layering it gets weird but I'm no expert.

ANYWAY... I've been away from the project for about 6 months on a remote job and now I'm finally getting back home and back to this project. Most of the spots that I repaired I think I'm just going to do the best I can with the rattle can (unless someone has a better idea) and then probably cover them with some vinyl body armor stuff to hide my mistakes . Let me know if you think this is a terrible idea.

However, my drivers side door (half door) is the bigger problem. I brought the whole thing down to the metal, primed and painted thinking I would have an easier time painting / blending the single panel, but I just can't get it to look anything but completely awful. Doesn't even pass a 20ft test. I suspect that's a combination of the rattle and my lack of experience. I was wondering if anyone has had experience just taking the doors to Maaco and having them do it? Will they use custom paint if I buy it and bring it in? I can't seem to find any info. I would do all the prep work myself of course. Alternatively I thought about painting the doors black to contrast or plasti-dipping them or something.

Any thoughts? Would investing in a spray gun make a massive difference or am I better off just letting someone else do it? Thanks in advance.

Metallics are very difficult. Gotta get the right primer and then base. I say just plastidip the doors black and call it a day.

I’m planning on doing my doors black, I think it looks ok and offsets the rest. One of those ‘projects’ that’s not a must but just something to do, haha.

Take the whole jeep to a painter... (NOT maaco) and ask him to give you a "car lot job" on the areas of concern....

He'll need the whole jeep so he can blend the new paint w the old....

A car lot job, is good enough to liok good and sell a car but far from a show car job.... looks decent but doesn't break the bank.

Then don't pick it apart if you see a little orange peel or a fisheye somewhere.... he did it on a saturday night when he was half drunk... lol

Btw when I say painter I mean a person not a business....
A collision shop makes big money from the insurance and pays whatever painter they currently have a fraction of that to paint.... get him to do it at home and you'll save money....

Ask around at a couple of small car lots for his name and number....

OK, I'll chime in.

Gottagofast gives the best advice if you're looking to save a few bucks.
Stop by a cheapo used car lot (maybe a buy here, pay here lot) and ask who they have do their body work. You may have to ask at a few places.
They'll need the whole vehicle so that they can paint the doors and blend the color onto the fenders and side panels. Let them supply their own paint and clear coat. They probably pay less for it than you.
It'll come out better if you have the wheel flares off and whatever trim you can remove.

When you take the Jeep in to be painted, have it clean and don't leave anything of value (even the registration) in the vehicle.

Don't be shy about asking any questions.

Good Luck, L.M.

Thanks everyone for your advice; very much appreciated. I'm going to stop by my local el-cheapo garage that also does body work on Monday to get a quote. If that doesn't shake out or is absurdly expensive (they've done work for me before but never had them do paint) I'll do the small car lot thing and see who they recommend.

Last season I had a well-respected collision place owned by a friend of a friend look at it and he came back and told me it would cost more to match and paint than the vehicle was worth (!!!), but I think they were just being perfectionists about it. I don't need that. It's really a spot on the hood, the one door, and the tailgate / rear corners (which I'm perfectly willing to hide behind some vinyl or metal armor). I don't really have any idea what that sort of thing should cost but I was expecting them to come back with like 600-800 not "more than the KBB value" eesh. Is that crazy? It doesn't have to look like a million bucks it just has to look better than what I can do with a rattle can ;-) ;-).

Probably better to just let them try to match the metallic champagne color than do the contrast color job then I guess? Or maybe see what they say and go from there.

The body shop will pay the same guy you'd find talking to the car lot folks to do the work and double or tripple the price to put gas in the owners gofast boat next weekend...

For "a spot on the hood" they'll paint the whole hood.... then for the rear it'll be the whole back end...
When it's done the value of the jeep will go up by more than the cost of the paint job.

I have been doing collision repair and painting for over 30 years.
I can tell you painters make 90 to 100k per year.
In my area the labor rate the insurance company pays the shop is $46 per hour and the painter makes $19 to $21 per flat rate hour.
Painters typically turn 100 flat rate hours per week.

Did as you guys suggested and found a guy with his own garage who some of these guys sub work out to. He quoted $300 to "touch it up" but was pretty clear he felt he couldn't blend it well enough that it wouldn't be visible. Instead he suggested $600 to paint the "whole thing". By whole thing of course he means just the outside of the jeep. Since it's a yj I'm a bit worried that the inside to outside contrast with the exposed tub might still be jarring.

Any thoughts / recommendations? Thanks!

fwiw I've also wondered how this works / looks when someone plasti-dips a yj lol (or do the strip the whole thing down and do the entire tub? yikes that must be a lot of work)

You get what you pay for.
We charge about $4500 to refinish the same color.
Color change adds about another thousand.
And that is for an oem looking finish, add another 1k if you want it sanded flat and rubbed.

Nobody cares what the inside looks like...

600 sounds pretty cheap.... materials should be about half of that....
I'd at least do some homework on him....

The biggest thing is the prep work.... that's what keeps the paint looking good instead of peeling in a couple years

yeah seemed a bit too cheap to me too (maaco-territory). I'll make sure he is including prep / sanding or I guess just do it myself. This is honestly why I was trying to avoid painting the whole thing as I imagine the prep is what actually takes the time... but I guess the spot touch-ups looking different is somewhat unavoidable?

I painted my doors black after I removed the half doors and soft top. I used John Deere black engine paint because it seems to be impervious to just about everything and it's what some of the Harley owners have used to "murda" there bikes. I came out alright and looked good with the yellow Jeep.
I would post a picture but

It would appear that I figured it out. I don't know if I went the correct path but at this point I don't care. Ok so how do I do this so one can expand the picture?
