Please help a Jeep Newbie

Hey guys, I just bought a 1990 Wrangler with a 5 spd. stick, 2.5L 4 cyl. I like the Jeep, but I'm pretty torqued off right now. I drive it back and forth 20 miles to work, and I was on my way home when it quit. I have a quarter tank of gas left, so it's not that. It cranks really good and will turn over, but in order for it to start, I have to feather it like crazy. It runs really rough when it does, but again I have to feather it to run and it doesn't last. Any ideas? I can turn wrenches, but am not a mechanic. Thanks.

Levi

Fuel pump or sending unit? Do you get good fuel pressure? Clogged injectors? Good spark?

You have a lot of things you can check. Oh, put some gas in it...the gauge isn't always right...

In any situation like this you have to check the basics; Spark & Gas. If you have spark then you have to make sure you're getting fuel so check the fuel pressure. Your fuel pump/filter may have to be replaced. Sounds like you may not be getting enough fuel. Also, just because your gauge indicates 1/4 tank that doesn't mean that you have enough gas. The gauge might be off. Put 3 gallons in and rule it out. This way if you have to drop the tank you're not putting too much in. It's also possible that you may have some bad injectors. Start with the basics and go from there.

Can you kind of explain where some of this stuff is at? I'm a dumb kid compared to a lot of you guys. Fuel pump on the engine or in the gas tank? etc. I also don't have resources to check a lot of this stuff...

Okay. Thanks guys. I checked the little switch on the carb there, and flipped it and it took a bit, but the old gal started. After she started, I dropped about 2.5 gals in and I'll fill it up back in town. Appreciate it!

We better be finding a gas station when our yj gets to half a tank, but it runs 150 miles before the needle comes off full.

I have a 90 YJ with a similar problem. I KNOW there's gas in it, it's turning over but not starting. Just read back on an old post, gave it a try and it started right up. This is what worked for me:

Turn the key to on, but don't start it. Listen for the fuel pump. If it's working (luckily mine was) leave it for 5 seconds and do it twice more. Then turn ignition all the way, give a touch to the pedal and BAM. I forget the reasoning behind it, but "gift horse". The same poster gave another trick, so I'll see if I can't find the original and repost for ya. Good luck.
