Poor little 4banger

So we went for a ride up the country yesterday in my buddies 93 Yj 2.5 and after pulling a hill, on pavement I might add, we heard a pop and a clink clink clink. We coast to a stop and go out to take a look and we find this:

Obviously we snapped a rod. He later told me when it happened he saw a trail of oil in the rear view mirror and he knew he was skrewed. We walked the road back and found a fisted sized piece of block in the road. Went back to the jeep and discovered the rod broken and hanging out the side of the motor.

So... He was thinking of doing a 2.9 stroked four cylinder but is still waiting for the dyno charts to be emailed to him. He's been waiting for a while so I'd figure I'd ask if anyone knew what kind of hp and torque they make. If anyone has done this feedback would also be appreciated.

Honestly, theres no reason to do a stroked 2.5 because of the rod problems they have. He needs to go 4.0 or something else IMO or he will have the same problem again. This makes the 10th thread I have seen in the last few weeks with 4 cylinder problems on top of the 4 I've had now with a rod out the side. People can say what they want about who did what before....its still a problem regardless.

Yeah that makes sense. We figured they had rod problems cause we already heard 2 more stories from friends. The PO is a friend and had kinda stalled in in some water before he lifted it and didn't bother pulling the plugs before cranking it over again. He said it started up but never ran right since so we suspect he bent a rod which led to this. He wants to do a v8 but didn't want to do it now. He wanted to do axles first then save for a motor and trans not all at once. Maybe he'll pick up another 4banger off CL for now

For the record, the engines don't have problems, until someone or something makes it a problem.

I'd be looking at swapping in some real ponies/torque though. You might fancy a small block under the hood. That'll tow you, your buddies, AND your camper.

I just made a 1100 mile trip in my YJ 2.5L lifted on 31's with offroading. didn't have any issues. Nothing to be scared about as long as the engine doesn't sound sick. It shouldn't be an issue.
