Price Check / Am I in for lifted problems? / General gut feeling?

Hi all,

My current YJ has hole in frame, and won't be inspectable.

I am looking at replacing. Can you all take a look at the images below and give me your gut feelings on what you see, and the price at $5000?

I am coming from a pretty stock setup, so this lifted version scares me a bit with the "what am I getting myself into questions" on maintenance, and general upkeep. Can you give your input on:
  • Look at that drive line angle, is that right?
  • The SOA - should the leafs be that flat? Is that "normal"?
  • Does it look installed right?
  • Body lift ok? Does it look like a monkey did it?
  • Long term how will this hold up, what am I looking at for different maintenance?
  • Custom transfer case? Should that worry me? This is worrying me.

This is going to be an Easter -> Thanksgiving cruiser, more going to the park with the kids and dog as compared to any type of serious off roading. I am more interested in the 77,000 miles and low-ish price (for Vermont) than the lifted aspect. I put 11,000 miles on my last yj in 7 years.

Ad says this:

I have a 1995 Jeep Wrangler 4x4 with 77,600 miles on it. Has new BF Goodrich Mud Tires, New Woody's drive shaft and new U-Joints all around. Fresh oil change and all new fluids. Also has new JVC Stereo. Comes with 2 sets of soft doors. Also a fiberglass hard top. New battery this fall. Runs great. Strong clutch that shifts great. Has an extra 4 low low transfer case that was custom built. 4 inch suspension lift and 2 inch body lift. Clean frame, no rot. $5000 obo. txt is preferred calling is fine too.














I am coming from a 4 cylinder, and I know it isn't going to be ballsy, but 77000 miles has some life left on it.

Thoughts?

Looks like it has a custom Tom Woods DS...unless they had the wrong DS made it should be fine.
I wouldn't worry about the DL angle should be fine. T case should be good to go it seems they add extra low gears....I would get under it and peck on the frame with a hammer and look for soft spots..

Hey sccritterkiller, thanks for the help.

What do you think it means by "Has an extra 4 low low transfer case that was custom built." I worry about "custom made things" that I am driving down the road.

I am in rwd 99.9% of the time.

You think it looks ok, everything else?

Will I get crazy driveline wobble when I am going faster / higher rpm's with the driveshaft or no?

What about a cost of $5000?

They have probably changed the gear ratio in the transfer case for low range...if built correctly it will just make 4 lo lower than stock...which is great for trial use...shouldnt notice any difference in 4hi or 2wd...

If the woods DS was measured and fabbed correctly you shouldn't have and wobble...go to Tom Woods website and look aound...curious if also has a sye and if the driveshaft is CV style...it's a common upgrade one you do a lift.... .looks pretty solid...I woukd be concerned about the rusted frame being a Vermont jeep...as far as price that's up to you...I am not in the market for a jeep so don't really know the current market..it does have some nice upgrades especially if it has an sye and cv DS.

At least some rust on the frame is a normal part of Vermont - I don't think it is so far gone that it isn't worth money is it? If I take it and clean the frame up, put a coat of paint on it, maybe spray some oil in the frame rails, it should help arrest the rust spread right?

It is going to go off the road and maybe never see snow again, and I like the idea of the lift for getting it out of the elements....

has a soa, which is okay if done right, check the steering etc. To me the the rear axle is not in the correct position. looks like they should have welded in the mounts with a few more degrees thus the drive shaft looks steep. Also appears the leaf mounts are 90 degree vs rolled which can lead to spring issue down the road. Hard to tell but is there a rear window for the hardtop? if not the do they have the trim section at the bottom that the glass attaches too?

See these are the things that I just don't know about. I just want something bone stock!

If you could look at it and tell me "This is wack, move along" or "Things will be fine" I would appreciate it.

I realize this is tough.

I am thinking this extra "stuff" is putting me out of my depth....

Anyone have a bone stock yj with a 6 cylinder with like 100,000 or less miles. THAT IS WHAT I WANT!

I would pass as well. There are stockers out there,you just have to look a little more. I passed on more than a few before I got mine bone stock.
