Rear Track Bar

Learned something new yesterday. Funny story ... a horse walks into a bar.... lol

but seriously..a funny story...

Picked up some axles yesterday and upon getting home I thought something looked odd. I looked a little closely and thought it was missing a shock mount as the shock on the other side was cut. So I immediately contacted the person I bought them from and said hey, we have a problem. The rear is missing a shock mount. He said he personally unbolted both shocks. Let me send you a picture I said. Sent the pics and his response was "what's missing? They are both there"

I pointed out how the one side has the cut "shock" and the other side is missing. He said that's the track bar. <crickets> Well color me purple. I apologized and thanked him again and moved on.


So curious now, why is there a track bar on the rear of the YJs?

For lateral stability... it keeps the axle from deflecting sideways during an agressive turn or skid. most folks remove at least the rear and many the front too when installing a lift kit.

Ditch the track bar. Rides way better without it. Plus it binds your suspension, preventing full flex when you need it. Plus it looks better without it.

I ditched my front/rear track bars. Night and day difference in ride quality.

Maybe I should put a 'Missing TB' hang tag on the rear track bar mount for future owners.

it has a 4" lift running 33s. will see light trail, moderate beach but lots of road time. so dump both track bars?

Ditch both of them, I get up to 80 - 90 mph without them. No problem at all.

track bars are pointless on a leaf sprung vehicle they are only needed with coils. It was something stupid AMC did after the tv news story about CJ's rolling that killed sales so they did everything they could to keep the jeeps suspension from flexing at all and they succeeded.
