Regear Spinoff: 4cyl Owners That Re-Geared 4:88 With 33"s

Ok, I know there are a bunch of YJ owners out there running 33s on their lil 4 banger like I am and wishing they had more power. My question is to those who have re-geared from 4:10 to 4:88 gears. Are you happy now? Was it worth the $500 plus investment? Any comments or advice from folks that have actually done this would be greatly appreciated.

The biggest improvement will be below 10 mph where your current 1st gear is too high... top end is mostly a wash.... your new 5th gear would be slightly steeper than your current 4th gear so you would be able to start using 5th but you would have to downshift to 4th more often than you currently have to downshift to 3rd...

We did 4.88's (from stock 3.55) in my buddy's 4 cyl auto on 33's and he ended up not liking them on the highway and changed to 4.56 BUT
The auto doesn't have od so it doesn't work out the same....

IMHO 4.10 to 4.88 isn't a big enough change to get your rpm's right BUT IF you can stomach it dropping to 31's and regearing would make a substantial difference and only cost you 1" of ground clearance....
As a bonus your axles are much more likely to live long happy lives w 31's

I just upgraded mine to 31s and still have the 4.10/4.11 setup... I'm contemplating the 4.88 route myself...

Now.. I get different people telling me that I'll have to re-gear the front and rear differentials lest I detonate the transfer case (which is factory NP231) when I try to run in 4wd. I'm assuming that's still true and I'll need ring & pinion kits for the 30 and the 35?

Also, any rumor that without re-gearing, 5th gear tends to go away with larger tire sizes?

Yes you must regear both axles or give up having a 4x4

Yes without regearing 5th gear doesn't go away but it becomes too high for a 4 cyl to use.

Wow, so only 1 person that had a buddy has done the gear swap. I guess there must be a lot of miserable 4 cyl owners out there like me.

Actually the topic has been covered so many times that nobody felt like they had anything to add....

Lots of folks have regeared and are happy w the choice..... you won't have a fast jeep... a poorly geared 4.0 will still run off and leave you but you end up w a better 1st gear and a usable 5th gear.

When the time comes, I've decided on the 4:88s. I can't stand the thought of smaller tires. The Jeep just wouldn't look right to me with 4" of lift. Probably install a lunchbox locker in the front at the same time while I'm there.

Parts cost only, so labor expense not an issue. I have considered 5:13's and that is really why I asked the original question, "are you happy?". Would 5:13's raise the happy factor in your opinion? lol I know I'm not building a hot rod, I just want to be able to get out of my own way on the road and have fun.
