Rust...and alot of it on the bottom

Hey guys...i just baught my wrangler today actually and the whole lower plat form is rusy...im talking about the shocks, struts, frame, chasey...Is this normal for a wrangler? Also the bracket of the shock thats connect to the chasey snapped completely...any suggestions on how to fix it?Do i have to buy a new bracket and weld it back to the chasey because thats how it was until it popped off. Yea, my rear differential is leaking fluid...Im thinkin just a gasket should do the trick but i need your guys input first. The rear differential is rusty as well.....forgot to mention that up there. Sorry about all the questions but im new to a jeep and the best thing to do is ask people that have first hand experience.

Mike

Mike,

Welcome... I would say that most of your rust issue is from the Jeep being up north and the winter's. There are a couple things you can do. As for the rust, on the chasey, which I will refer to as the frame, you can buy several good products at your local auto parts store to help seal this up. You will want to scrape any large sections first, or get ride of those that are flake like, you may also need to sand it down a bit, then use a cleaner, then apply 2-3 coast of the anti rust stuff.. it will dry black, thenyou can paint over it in black if you wish. should come is sizes from a small bottle and up from there.

As for the busted shock bolt in the frame, couple things you can do, weld it, or drill it out depending on which type it is. Also for any and all new bolts, lug nutz etc you put on/take off, use anti sieze compound, this will help if you ever have to take them off again.

rear diff leak is about standard for your axle and should be a dana 35. Just use a good sealer next time you change the fluid and it should take care of it.

That's all i have for now... I am sure others will chime in and offer more grass roots YJ help.. again welcome!

I usually drain my diffs every 2 or 3 thousand miles. Unless I go thru some heavy water or mud. Then I change it more often.

As for the diffs, mine get done about 3-4 times a year, based on my wheeling trips.. and how much water I have been in. I think under normal driving its like every 10k or 15k miles for in the service manual.

Ouch we are so hurt. Nah, just joking. You might want to try jeepforum, or JeepBBS. Those are a couple of highly travelled sights. Also Pirate4x4 has a lot of good information. They might be a little short with people over there, but excellent source of info.

This board is probably only 6 or so months old. It has grown significantly in its short life.
