Should I buy this YJ

Hello, see description and pictures below.

Of course I would like to have a 91-95 YJ for various reasons however I don't have a problem installing the Howell or an DUI ignition etc. I would just like the opinions of the experts on whether this is a good deal.

1989 Jeep YJ- 120K- Rebuilt 4.2 6cyl. New carb. New tires 5. Less than 300 miles on them. New shocks . Runs great rides great. One rust spot passenger door and window frame. $4,350

The price is about right, you didn't mention the underside condition, If you have rust on the door I'd be crawling all over the frame to check for rust. I'd also ask why he's running an electric fuel pump, the stock came with a mechanical pump on the side of the block just in front of the Dizzy. For the price and no rust underneath I might be tempted, but it will most likely have the dreaded BA-10 Tranny if it's a 5 spd. an AX-15 with external slave upgrade would have me sold.

Oh Yeah, and don't drive it anywhere else without an air cleaner of some sort.

Where is it? I see prices fluctuate quite a bit based on location alone.

From the pics and info, I agree with the above. I am sure he has a little room to play on the price. Does not look like you will need to dump a ton into it right off the bat so you would have a little to play with down the road. Bottom line, do YOU like how it drives/looks? If so, pull the trigger or someone else will! Around here, a Jeep under $5k that runs decent lasts about a day.

Thank you, PO states he doesn't know why an electric fuel pump over mechanical as it was done prior to his ownership. I will definitely be crawling underneath and are most air cleaners somewhat universal (2 barrel etc.), I know a low clearance one would be advisable.

Florida, I ran an autocheck for what its worth. It was a Washington St. Jeep for the first 7 years of its life before being in Florida for the last 20+.

Barring any other rust and of course how it runs/feels, I would be tempted to pay $3,500. Probably just FI and DUI for starters. Better soft top, seats, lift tires next. I just thought for the price and condition (minus the 2 visible rust spots) it didn't seem that bad.

I appreciate the response.

Measure the neck on the carb and google "Spectre performance air cleaners" I can't tell for sure from the pic, but that looks like a motorcraft carb. Plenty of options out there.

You could pay an extra couple grand for a rust free YJ with fuel injection and the AX15 with external slave. I personally wouldn’t purchase a rig with any amount of rust but maybe a rotten rocker panel doesn’t bother you.

"Some rust" a body panel, door bottom, etc is not that big of a deal. A frame member with a rust hole in it, then yeah, I would be a bit concerned. Even then, depending on how handy you are with a welder, factoring in the rest of the package, the price. I would not shy away. Some people have more money than skills but unfortunately for me (and others) it is the opposite. HA!

Thanks for the info, fortunately or unfortunately I shy away from body work as I never feel I could do as good as a job as someone with the knowledge and the skills.

I would look at the frame very carefully based on the lipstick you can see up top. Amature bed liner job, bedline on roll bar,, and peeling from the floor.. Rusted hard top bolts and bracket on rear gate. Freshly painted bumpers.
Take that with new tires etc... looks like some one took a beater and put lipstick on it to sale.

Would be a nice camp jeep, but I don't know if I would want to use it as a dd

Check it out as the OPs suggest. It may be a decent buy.
I would have a hard time leaving that spot without checking out the two pickups in your pic. Both have tags but if you don't ask if they are for sale you will never know. You might not even want a pickup but those late 40's early 50's units could be money makers. Just my .02.

If it doesn't come with an air cleaner, a used stock air cleaner will be your best bet. The stock air cleaner is low profile because of the limited clearance between the top of the carb and the bottom of the hood. The hose at the rear of the valve cover connects to a small filter in the stock air cleaner. Having the seller supply a stock air cleaner can be a negotiating tool.
In the top pic I don't see a PCV hose. There should be a PCV valve in a grommet near the oil filler cap. That hose should run to a fitting on the manifold. To me this would be a big deal. Why is it missing and where did it go?

Without a top and with the missing parts, I'd proceed with extreme caution. Any rot (not simply the observed rust) would be a deal breaker on this Jeep for me.
Price seems a little high, but without a close examination of the Jeep and driving it, It's difficult to offer more advice.

It appears that you've been looking for a while and you should have a good idea of what a fair price should be. It's unlikely that you'll find a "bargain" that doesn't need a lot of work and money.

As far as this particular vehicle goes, "Meh!". If the seller drops the price, then depending on how much the drop was, I might be more interested.

Keep us posted on your progress.

Good Luck, L.M.
