Should I replace my 2.5l with a 4.0? Or another 2.5?

Hey there, years ago, I scored a 1987 Jeep yj for $100. It was complicated, but all it needed at the time was a battery and a day of work. I drove it for years and replaced a few things along the way. The ax5.transmission is the biggest thing that comes to mind. Now, the back story for this is a bit complicated, but the Jeep is in New Orleans. It happened to be parked in the wrong place and got in the middle of a shootout. So it has bullet holes in it. Within a week, I fed rod knock and put the Jeep in storage. I also moved to California for work that week. The Jeep now has to move and I figure it’s time to do something with it. I have access to a garage in Mississippi for a week in September, and am considering driving down there, which I have to do anyway, fixing it, and driving it to Nashville, where i’m About to be living. That ax5 transmission sucks and is hard to find. Should I stick with the 4 banger and try to track one down in Mississippi? Or buy a rebuilt one and have it shipped? Or replace the whole engine and transmission with the 6 cylinder and the ax15? Keep in mind, I have time constraints and a borrowed garage to contend with.

If you're under time constraints just replace your 2.5 engine swaps take a lot longer than most ppl anticipate. A lot of ppl are rolling around with their 2.5 just fine. Until you're better prepared for a 4.0 just pull that 2.5

I love jeep inlines but i would never swap a 2.5 for one it's easier just to sell the jeep and buy one with a 4.0 already in it. As much as i detest V8 swaps i would say V8 swap it since it never had a 4.0 to begin with your not really ruining a good inline powered jeep. Chevy is probbaly my most hated car manufacturer ever but i would 350 swap it since parts are cheap.

None of the above.... you can have the jeep shipped for about $800....
Get it home and take your time building it

Selling the jeep and buying another is out of the question. I have a lot of good memories with this one and that's mostly why I want to keep it going. The 2.5 route might be my best bet.

I see now that they make a conversion kit to retrofit the ax15 to this engine, so maybe I'll just count on that to be my contingency plan for when the ax5 disintegrates again.

Aside from the drive to Tennessee when it's done, I won't be really doing any highway driving. So the 2.5 L should be just fine. Now, the question is where do I find a replacement? I see some rebuilt engines for sale between $1500 and $2000.

Since this isn't my daily driver and since it's stripped out, dented and rusted with bullet holes and everything. I'd like to not be putting a ton of money into it just to get it on the road. Should I take a chance on something from craigslist in the 80K miles range?

That's the route I would go. Buy a used 2.5 and drop it in there until you're better prepared.

Whatever you do, please don’t fix the bullet holes. That thing needs to go rat rod or Mad Max style.

Oh...and buy a cheap 2.5L.

Yeah, I'm not going to do anything cosmetic to it. I didn't have a chance to see where the bullet holes were, aside from my new windshield and soft top. That may be all of them, so it might not have any when it's back on the road. It won't be my daily driver this time, so the top is getting thrown away and the doors are getting sold to help pay for the engine. I'll post pictures in October when it's back on the road.

Whoa whoa whoa my friend.
I'm in need of a complete soft top so I'm sure others are as well.
So don't be hasty throwing it away.

It was old when I bought it. It was trashed before the shooting incident. That was 5 years ago now. It’s been sitting out in New Orleans through rain and hurricanes. If I thought I could salvage it, I would. The doors are probably fine though, so I do plan on selling them to help fund this project.

I think you should listen to Gottagofast.
Have it shipped to your next home and then take your time with a 4.0 swap or a SBC swap.
Replacing the 2.5 would be a far down the list option for me. I guess it really depends on your budget.

Good luck, L.M.

If you really need it done just throw in a used 2.5l and call it a day..but if it were me, I'd pay the $800 shipping like Gottagofast suggested and just take my time and do what I really want to do with it.

It sounds like you want to 4.0 swap it - and I think you should. But not right now, do it when you get settled in. Moving is stressful enough and trying to replace a motor before you do it is not going to help. Just ship the thing and get to it when you get to it.

I swapped in a used 2.5 in mine after 200k miles. Still took better part of a weekend.

Runs great now. I paid $300 for a used engine with half the miles. I just replaced all the gaskets, rear main seal, clutch, etc. before installing it.
