so its not the transfercase now what?

OK last night i lifted my jeep up on jack stands, i tried to engage 4x4, as I put it in 4 high of 4 low. You can hear the transfer case engage, front drive
shaft spins and the front tires make 1 revolution and stop. while drive shaft
keeps spining! I seem to have strong vacum at the actuator. anybody have a clue?

sounds like the CAD is not engaging all the way. the forks sometimes break, or the diaphram that handles the vacuum goes bad also. pull the cad and see if the fork is moving all the way when you go 2wd to 4wd. also, sometimes you have to roll a little for it to engage all the way

yes. "central axle disconnect"

its held in w 4 bolts (7/16th iirc).

remove it and let it hang. with the engine running shift from 4wd to 2wd and back while watching it. you should see it slide back and forth. they sometime crack on the underside of the pin they ride on (you'll understand what i mean when you see it).

the diaphragm also goes bad on them.

you'll lose a little bit of gear oil when you remove it, but it wont be much
