So new YJ owner here

What’s up guys, been a while since I’ve been here since the app quit working, but I’ve added a new jeep to my life. Here’s my 94 Sahara next to my 02 Sahara.

I’ve got a question for y’all. It has a 3” BL that I do plan on eventually switching to an actual lift, but it’s going to be a while. My question is this: I have a very hard time shifting into 4Hi and I flat out can’t get it into 4Lo. I know it’s because of the BL. Is there a cost effective way of solving this issue? Thanks.

Welcome back ChokeGT

If you have a band saw, remove the 3" pucks and cut them in half.
You'll need new bolts (1 1/2" shorter than the ones you remove) and will probably have to reposition your fan shroud. There may be spacers under your grill panel, one on each side, sitting on the frame.
The PO may have had to extend the gas filler and vent hoses. Take a look there too.
If there's anything else, other posters should chime in.

Good Luck, L.M.

I'd buy a 1.25" body lift and a 1" motor mount lift....

The shifting problem is likely only partially related to the body lift... 2h to 4h likely has nothing to do w it....
The tcase shifter in a yj is not attached to the body like it is on a tj....
Likely you need to look at the condition of your linkage

I would too.
But....OP asked for a cost effective way to lower the body.
If he's running stock size tires up to 30" tires, he can simply get rid of the entire body lift and use 3" shorter bolts and mount the radiator in the original place.

I didn't comment on the TC because OP states he "knows" the issue is caused by the lift. I have a minor issue shifting my transmission into reverse (I have to hold the shifter in reverse or it pops out) due to a 2" body lift, but no issues with shifting the TC.
The trans shifter hits the rubber boot even though I ground away as much of the floor as I could without leaving a space between the boot and the floor.

How much OP drops the body depends on his tire size.

Good Luck, L.M.

If @ChokeGT is running <31" tires, I agree with @Gottagofast - a brand new 1" Daystar BL (which also replaces the factory bushings which is likely degraded some) is $89. A set of BDO 1" MML mounts is $90. For less than $200, you get new bushings, new mounts, new hardware, etc. and bolt-in convenience.

Thanks for the responses, guys.

I guess “know” was the wrong term. I had issues with my TJ due to the 3” BL it came with, and my brother had the same with his TJ cuz of a TC drop. I figured it’d be the same here, but It makes sense if it’s not due to the difference I’m them. When I check the linkage, what should I be looking for?

And in terms of dropping the BL, it has 32x11.5 tires on it, and it’s already scraping on short turns. I plan on doing it properly down the road, but it’s not in the funds currently.

I had found this bracket below that’d supposedly fix the problem but I have no idea if this is the right application or if it’s just snake oil.

Thanks again.

I would just scrap the body lift all together.

Replacing with a 1" has a lot of advantages though...

If it's rubbing on your sheet metal or flares in tight turns, it'll rub even more if you drop the body.
Is it rubbing on the leaf springs or body? What wheels are you running? Stock or aftermarket? With the 32s on aftermarket wheels and a 3" lift, you might be rubbing on the springs. Do you know what backspacing your wheels have? The 3" body lift should allow your tires to clear the body.
If you can post some pics, someone should be able to offer an opinion.

You're well advised to get rid of the 3" BL. I have a 2" BL and will be replacing it with a shorter BL. I like the space between the frame and tub for ease of wrenching and cleaning, but a 1" lift might be just as handy.
I don't advise replacing the BL with longer shackles. Some spring lifts come with slightly longer shackles and that seems to work well, but lifting with shackles alone can lead to alignment problems.

Good Luck, L.M.

As to what it’s rubbing, I am not sure. Once I get home I’ll figure it out.

I was planning on eventually putting a 1 or 1.25” BL on it with a 1” MML and do a proper leaf lift of maybe 2 inches. I have a similar set up on my TJ (with a 3” suspension lift instead of 2”) and I love it.

I have KO2s on it. I have no idea about the wheels. I’ll check that out later.

Thanks for the help so far. My main concern right now isn’t the lift or the rubbing, just getting it into 4Lo. I don’t plan on hitting any hard trails with it, since I have my TJ I’ve been building up for four years, just light FSRs. I just want to know I can use 4Lo worst case.

Have you tried to adjust the linkage yet?

Good Luck, L.M.
Actually he didn't ask about how to drop the body...
You and I both assumed that he would do that but actually he was implying that he was keeping the 3" bl for now

Rereading his first post I see that he already has way too much tire for his current lift and that dropping won't work....

OP, in response to your question I'm gonna say no, there is not an inexpensive way to solve your problem unless you want to cut out some of your floor.

I edited the quote to show only the OP's question.

Yep, Gottagofast, you're right.
I guess the first answer to this is for OP to get a copy of the Factory Service Manual and adjust the linkage.
If that doesn't fix the problem, post again.

Good Luck, L.M.

Ah alright guys. Sorry for the confusion and thank you for deciphering what I meant.

I’ll inspect the linkage and take it from there.

Thanks for all the help so far.
