Soft top question

I purchased my first YJ a couple of days ago Iím new to the YJ and have a question about the hardtop that is on it it is definitely a Mopar hardtop from the YJ era iím not sure if itís original or has been added the rear wiper works it has the defroster and wiper buttons in the correct spot on the dash but the jeep has half doors with the soft upper door panels so Iím not sure if it originally came with a soft top but my question is what will I need to add a factory style soft top And is there anything I need to look at currently that I might already have for the factory soft top like certain channels Iím not a hard top guy so I will be getting rid of the hardtop once I can get a soft top on this thing.
Iím sure Iíll have many other questions in the future .

Thanks in advance

Make sure to get the top that fits your doors, as there are to styles. One has rounded corners and the other has pointed corners. Mine has pointed corners (Rampage) but the top (Bestop) uses rounded corners. It will function but just is not 100%.

The drivers door should have a sticker with the VIN.
If it matches the VIN found on the body the jeep was originally a soft top.
(all soft tops were half doors / all hard tops were full doors)

If your half door 'uppers' work well with the hardtop, you would be better served to sell the uppers with the hardtop as 'door fit' is a major bone of contention with hardtop purchasers. And who knows what your uppers are.

With just the half doors(lower) remaining you will free to obtain any soft top/matching upper/hardware configuration (i.e. manufacturer) of your liking without the headache of combining old with new.

I agree I’ll sell the uppers with the top for sure I spoke to a buddy of mine who has had a few YJ’s and he told me they were probably TJ uppers I’m at work so I can’t compare them to one of my TJ’s but that would make sense to me as far as the lower doors there the originals the doors have never been off the Jeep I’ll try and take a picture of the rivits this evening but they are on both the doors they look like they may have been retaining a channel or something I’m just not sure if the YJ’s had a channel there I know the TJ’s do not have any channel we’re the upper and the lower meet at the seal .

Is the YJ a 1987?
'87 was the only year the soft uppers used snaps rather than a door channel.

Not true. Jeep sold the YJs at the end with an optional soft top for the full steel doors. Basically part of the dual top option. They were rare and not supported anymore. But the back part was the same as the OEM top with the front part like the Supertop so you could use full doors. Bestop made them - like all OEM tops - but don't have anything for them anymore (I asked).

Here's the parts diagram for it from the Mopar Parts catalog.

Is it a rivet or a snap in front of the mirror?

Just wanted to update this thread Iíve figured it all out last night after selling the hardtop and upper doors the rivits I was referring too earlier are in the front door upper channel retainer holes the previous owner removed the channels and installed pop rivits Iím assuming to just fill the holes I plan on today just drilling the heads out and hopefully the previous owner didnít oversized the holes Iím used to a TJ which doesnít use the retaining channels on the front door .
Thanks for all the replies.

Just a heads up. Every soft top hardware package I've seen advertised with the tub channels did not include channels for the doors.

The photos lay everything out so you can see it.
The door channels would be easy to spot as they're shaped like boomerangs.
They are about $30 a pair online.
