Speaker question

Hi, this may be a stupid question but here it goes. My speakers are blown and I want to purchase new ones from Best buy, how do I know what kind of speakers I have, or what kind will fit, withouth having opened and taken out the speakers yet?

I have a 93 yj
Thanks

4x6 in the dash, 4" in the factory soundbar if you have one

One more question. Will it be easy to install if I do it myself? meaning, if I am the one taking it apart will it be pretty obviously to just backtrack the process with the new speaker or should I have someone knowledgeable in the electronics department do it for me?

you will have to take out your entire dash to do the front ones. they are birdcaged in and are a complete pain in the A$$.........unless big has perfected some other way. I HIGHLY recommend getting a front speaker pod from vdp

Search Results - Quadratec

it's what i did and put a set of 6" clarion's in. So much easier and sounds great.

There was a thread on here a while back, maybe in the electronics forum, that discussed this. They showed that if you fold down the windshield, and remove the black plastic cover below it, then both speakers are easily accessible. I wish I had seen it before I spent an hour on my back to get them in from under the dash.

The mechanics are more difficult than the speaker wiring. But then again I'm an Electronics Technician so what seems easy to me might seem confusing to others.

There are only two wires on the speakers, usually. With the Jeep fronts they often put 4 wires. basically they are running the rear and front to the same speaker. All you have to do is wire the negative (-) to the negative and positive (+) to positive. like putting a battery in the right way.

The nice thing is, if you get them backwards, they will work, they just will be out of phase. Basically you will lose bass response because the cone will try to move in when it should go out.

The annoying part, At least with the 89, Jeep did not mark on the speaker which was positive and which was negative to make it easy for you. they marked one A and one B. Depending on how the 93 wires are attached you may have to crimp a connector on the end of the wires to put on the new speakers spade lug.

I had heard the ease of the removal method depends on the year, some are front access, the older ones are rear access.

Nah you dont have to take the dash out....even my big butt can get them out no problem. All you need to do is get a long 9/32 socket and blacktape it backwards to make it sticky...then back the nuts off the studs and pull the speakers out. Its not easy, but a hell of alot easier than messing with the whole dash. Last set I did took about a hour and a half.
