Start up

Ok, so I just installed a new starter. In my experience when you start a vehicle there is really only one constant sound as the engine cranks and turns over. Since I installed the new starter, when I turn the key I can hear two distinct sounds, one is the engine and the other sounds like the starter. To me this doesn't make sense. Any ideas? Maybe the teeth arent lined up?? Thanks in advance...

new or new-reman? i got a reman about a week ago that got completely chewed on first crank. it made the most awful noise during start up and while running. i took it out and it ended up being just a bad reman. got a new reman and everything worked right and sounded right.

bad remans happen.

the one that was on there was a re-man as it said on the label...it had a little breather tube on the bottom, and i am sure water got in there when i went muddin and got submerged in the creek... see vid....haha

but i got the new one at pep boys and it was right out of the box and looked pristine, but i am not 100% confident that its brand new...do you have to line the teeth up somehow on install?

from what i understand, the teeth will line themselves up within the first couple of cranks. there shouldn't be anything you have to do to get it installed right besides making sure its all square and bolted tight.

i'm not sure about your 4.0 but it can't be too different from the 4.2. make sure it's not sitting kind of angled, i had a problem before where it didn't get bolted in plumb to the top.

Are you saying you hear a noise after the engine starts?? If so the starter is hanging up, get a replacement.

A buddy of mine asked that question as well. He thought it might not be disengaging...I will have to look into this after work.
